Civil War train wreck commemorated
BARRYVILLE, NY The Shohola Railroad & Historical Society will commemorate an 1864 Civil War train wreck at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday, July 15 at the old Barryville Congregational churchyard on Route 97. The original event occurred on July 15, 1864, when an Erie Railroad train carrying about 833 Confederate prisoners and 125 Union guards collided with a coal train between Shohola and Lackawaxen.
Immediately following the churchyard ceremony a guided walk to the actual site of the train wreck will start from the Shohola Township Museum, The Caboose, located at Route 434 next to Midtown Exxon.
