Babe Ruth Teeners League Playoffs
Frey nearly no hits Forest City in playoff opener
By RICHARD A. ROSS
NARROWSBURG, NY - Tusten Chiefs pitcher Torin Frey had it going big time in the opening round of the Babe Ruth Teeners League playoffs on July 6 versus Forest City.
Frey took a no-hitter two thirds of the way into the seventh inning before allowing a single before inducing the final out in the Chiefs 7-0 victory. Frey struck out 10 and walked two.
The Chiefs, on the other hand, were the recipients of nine walks issued by Forest City pitchers. The Chiefs loaded the bases in the first inning and got their first run as Mark Tesseyman reached on a fielders choice. In the fourth inning, they loaded the bases again and got their second run when Steve Steffens drew a walk. A single by Gaston Owen brought in two more to give the Chiefs a 4-0 lead.
The way Frey was bringing it, that seemed adequate but the Chiefs wanted more. In the fifth inning, Logan Grishaber got on with a single and Brad Reimer was hit by a pitch. A double steal gave the Chiefs runners at second and third. Both runners scored on a throwing error on a pickoff attempt by Forest Citys pitcher.
Chiefs advance to finals versus Eagles with win over Stars
BEACH LAKE, PA With ace Brad Reimer on the mound, the Tusten Chiefs semifinal 5-3 win over the Honesdale Stars wasnt that big of a surprise. On the other hand, the 5-1 loss by the ReMax Renegades to the Wallenpaupack Eagles was a shocker.
Consequently, the Chiefs were scheduled to open their best-of-three playoff championship series versus the Eagles at home on July 11 and not against their longtime rivals, the Renegades.
The Chiefs defeat of the Stars on July 6 began with an early lead courtesy of Tory Samsons lead-off single and theft of second base. Reimers triple brought him home. Frey walked and stole second, which gave the Chiefs runners at second and third when Greg MacArthur bounced one off the plate and the catchers throw went awry, allowing both runners to score. The Chiefs led 3-0.
In the fourth inning, a single by Joel Watson got the Stars started. Brian Murtaghs RBI made it 3-1.
The Stars tied it up in the fifth inning, getting a runner on by virtue of an error. Matt Dirlams base hit scored one run and a fielders choice brought in the second.
After a base hit by Logan Grishaber in the sixth, Frey racked up an RBI single.
A threat by the Stars ended with a double play started when Murtagh popped the ball up and a ball to Gaston Owen, who doubled off the runner.
The Chiefs got their final run in the seventh after MacArthur had a base hit and Jeremy Degori walked. Austin Sauer reached on a fielders choice and Stars shortstop Casey Stengle bobbled a comebacker by Steve Steffens allowing the run to score.
Reimer allowed only two earned runs and kept up his streak of 14 consecutive innings without issuing a walk. With playoff rules allowing pitchers to throw seven innings twice a week, Reimer was slated to get the start against the Eagles on July 11 and would be available for the third game if needed.
The Chiefs beat the stars 10-0 on Memorial Day weekend with Reimer on the mound.
