Painting a wild and scenic river

Sports enthusiasts and recreational users aren’t the only fans of the Delaware River. Poets and writers sing its virtues, photographers capture its many moods while painters express its qualities in watercolor, oils, acrylics, pastels and inks.

One group of painters meets at outdoor locations throughout the region to paint together. On June 16, the group, “Come Paint With Me,” gathered at Narrowsburg, NY’s, Main Street deck, which overlooks the large pool in the Delaware River known as the Big Eddy. Nearby, other members painted from their perch in the town’s gazebo, which also overlooks the river.

The group’s coordinator, Joan Polishook, of Lords Valley, PA, and the artists who join her, enjoy painting outdoors because it enhances their sense of communication with the natural environment and encourages a special relationship with nature. There is no charge to join the group and artists of all abilities are welcome.

Polishook started the group in 1997 and recently added a new opportunity for children to join her on July 13, at Grey Towers, in Milford, PA. To register a school-age child for “Come Paint with Me Kids I,” call 570/296-9630. For more information about the adult group, contact Polishook at mamajoan@ptd.net or 570/775-6896.
