MONTICELLO, NY — Welcome back to Monticello Men’s Softball, the league where the action and the drama never let up. After a year of covering high school sports, this writer hit the Monticello circuit for the first time and the action was sizzling.

In the opening of the evening’s double-header, much improved Sullivan Sports faced Schmidt’s Wholesale.

Schmidt’s got on the board in the first inning with a pair of runs, courtesy of RBI from Chris Schmidt and Lonnie Nielson. In the bottom of the frame, Sullivan answered with three runs to take a lead they would never relinquish. A leadoff single by John Bell set the table. Good base running got him to third and a sac fly by Des ‘Popeye’ Williams brought him in.

After Schmidt’s pitcher Dave Serrano loaded the bases, Sullivan’s Rob Sze hit a timely two-run single and Sullivan took the lead.

Winning pitcher Mike Greco settled in and allowed two runs in the third and another in the fourth. Better defense would have kept that total even lower. Heading into the bottom of the third, Sullivan held a narrow 5-4 lead. They got a run in the bottom of the inning to make it 6-4 and never looked back.

The hit of the game was a fourth-inning two-run blast by Williams that soared into the far reaches of the left-field slope. Williams ended up with three RBI. Bell drove in two more with a double in the fifth inning. Julian Dawson added a home run to the batting fest.

Sullivan Sports started the game with only nine players before George Brandes showed up to fill out the field with 10. A number of Sullivan’s heavy hitters were missing-in-action for this one.

Dan Spiggs had a two-run double for Schmidt’s and Chuck Poptre added an RBI in the fourth for Schmidt’s whose record fell to 4-5.

Sullivan Sports improved its record to 6-2.
