Seniors receive “Golden Passes” to Lake Superior

BETHEL, NY — Seniors this year will benefit from a “Golden Pass” program at the Lake Superior State Park that will allow Senior Citizens 62 and older to enter the park free of charge, except on weekends and holidays, by showing a valid picture ID or driver’s license.

Public Works Committee Chair Kathy LaBuda credits Town of Highland Councilman Andrew Valenti for bringing the program to the county’s attention. “With Mr. Valenti’s tireless efforts, this program would not exist. He attended meetings and lobbied for the seniors of Sullivan County to be given the same programs and respect as other seniors around the state.”

Valenti, who hails from Long Island and was a patron of the many state parks there, said he was shocked to arrive at Lake Superior State Park and be told his driver’s license might entitle him to driving privileges, but would not entitle him to free admission at the park.

“I approached the Legislature, and I gave them my presentation. It’s not about seniors in Sullivan County getting something for free. It’s about getting the seniors the same benefits as their peers,” said Valenti. “I have to thank the Legislature, and Chairman Chris Cunningham. But most of all, I have to thank Kathy LaBuda, because she recognized a wrong that needed to be corrected, and she worked to make it happen.”

Lake Superior State Park is open from 11:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. on weekends through June 26. From June 26 to Labor Day, September 4, the park will be open seven days a week from sunrise to sunset.
