Eight Sullivan West teams recognized by NYSPHAA for academic excellence

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY - The ancient Greeks ascribed to the belief in a sound mind and a sound body. Clearly, that credo lives on in Sullivan West athletics.

The New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHAA) recognized eight of the school’s teams for the 2005-06 school year for their academic excellence and team averages above 90 percent.

Athletic director Dave Franskevicz made a presentation to the school board and superintendent Alan Derry on June 7. Franskevicz announced each team and called up the coaches to accept certificates from NYSPHAA and pins for each of the athletes on the teams that helped contribute to the 90 percent or better standard.

The following teams and students were acknowledged.

The varsity boys soccer team compiled an average of 92.4. They were coached by Debbie Owens and Ron Bernhardt. Those athletes with averages of 90 percent or better included Justin Armstrong, Ross Bernhardt, Kevin Correa, Mitch Ellmauer, Jesse Fadis, Kienan Garn, Logan Grishaber, Joe Layman, Dave Lundgren, Gaston Owen, Kevin Pinkel and Brandon Redmond.

George Rose coached the varsity boys’ cross-country team who compiled an average of 91.2. Scholar athletes included Brett Cucci, Matt Gain, Trevor Kreznar, Matt Layman, Adam Nebzydoski, Leland Peterman and Mike VanWagenen.

George Shakelton coached the varsity girls cross-country team which had an average of 93.2. Scholar athletes included April Ackermann, Kendra Barker, Eleanor Bryan, Charlotte Peters, Chelsea Schadt, Jessica Wagner and Jessica Armstrong.

Shakelton also coached the varsity girls track team (93.8). Athletes that contributed their 90 or above averages included Sara Alsdorf, Jessica Armstrong, Kendra Barker, Eleanor Bryan, Katie Dnistrian, Rianne Erlwein, Ashley Murphy, Charlotte Peters, Chelsea Schadt, Julie Schultz and Jessica Wagner.

Ron Bauer coached the varsity boys track which compiled an average of 91.6. Its scholar athletes were Justin Alsdorf, Brett Cucci, Mitch Ellmauer, Matt Gain, Trevor Kreznar, Joe Layman, Adam Nebzydoski, Kevin Pinkel, Colin Seidl, Luke Tonjes and Mike VanWagenen.

Art Fife coached the varsity boys golf team who weighed in with a 94.7 average. Scholar golfers included Justin Armstrong, Noah Barker, Ross Bernhardt, Kevin Correa, Artie Norden, Bret Reimer, Kenny Rhodes and Bryan Schmidt.

Mike Ellmauer and J.P Lang coached the varsity softball team, which ended its season with an average of 90.6. The softball team’s scholars included Caralynn Davies, Genna Delgado, Morgan Edwards, Sarah Lander, Stephanie Meyer, Camille Peters, Ginger Pierce, Jennifer Pitz, Jessica Pitz, Samantha Vandiver and Audryanna Ward.
