MONTICELLO, NY—Paul Dench-Layton and his wife, Alix, raise pastured poultry and pork, meadow-raised beef and other animals in Livingston Manor. Dench-Layton said when he got his business going five years ago, the Cornell Cooperative Extension of Sullivan County gave the couple a lot of the knowledge and resources they needed to make the farm profitable. Last year, he said, they sold $165,000 worth of product outside the county, and spent the money in Sullivan County. He said it doesn’t make economic sense to cut the extension budget.

Morris arraigned on attempted murder charges

Medical issues will be “huge part” of defense

NARROWSBURG, NY—The allegations are that in the early morning hours of February 3, William “Chris” Morris fired a high-caliber rifle at sheriff’s deputy Cyrus Barnes seated in his car outside the Morris home. The bullet lodged into the seat inches from the deputy. Then another shot was fired.

Morris was indicted by a grand jury on May 31, said James Farrell of the Sullivan County District Attorney’s office, and he was arraigned on June 1 on two counts of attempted murder in the first degree, two counts of aggravated assault and two weapons charges. Morris has pleaded not guilty.

NYRI files power line application

New York state senators circle the wagons

NEW YORK STATE—New York Regional Interconnect, the company that wants to build new power lines through Sullivan and seven other counties, filed an application on May 31 with the New York Public Service Commission (PSC). The action kicked off a 30-day period during which organizations with an interest in the project can apply with the PSC to become a “formal party” to the proceedings.
