Sister act to close poetry month at Hamish and Henry
LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY Poetry month at Hamish and Henry Booksellers will conclude at 3:00 p.m. Saturday, April 29 with a reading by sisters Maxine Susman and Rita Wolpert, accompanied by wine and cookies.
The sisters wrote Close to the Heart: Sisters Writing about Breast Cancer when Wolpert was battling the disease in 1996. Their writing has since taken them in different directions. Wolpert writes about country life in her mountain home in Livingston Manor, observing wildlife, the seasons and her own menagerie as they reflect society and her inner weather. Susman writes about the personal histories of characters she meets in art, travel and family life.
Susmans poems have appeared in Potomac Review, Ekphrasis, Paterson Literary Review and many other journals and anthologies. She has won an honorable mention in the Allen Ginsberg Poetry Contest and elsewhere. She teaches English at Caldwell College, and divides her time between Highland Park, NJ and Livingston Manor.
Rita Wolpert teaches psychology and womens studies at Caldwell College. Her research has appeared in Music Perception and Society for the Advancement of Behavior Analysis, and her poetry in U.S. 1 Worksheets. Involved in social justice issues and pet rescue, she is currently on sabbatical in the mountains working on a book about behavior analysis in everyday life.
