GLENS FALLS, NY—As big as it is to win a New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHAA) title, the federation title is one step higher on the ladder. Pitting the winners of Class AA, A and B of the NYSPHAA championships against their counterparts from New York City’s Public School Athletic League (PSAL), the Catholic High School Athletic Association (CHSAA) and the Association of Independent Schools Athletic Association (AISAA) in a single-elimination, two-round tournament produces the state’s best in the three largest classifications in both boys and girls basketball.

Played on the weekend following the NYSPHAA championships at Glens Falls, the boys and girls federation games feature the elite talent in New York basketball.

Mount Vernon came from behind to beat the Railsplitters of Lincoln High School 62-60, in a rematch of the 2004 title game won by Mount Vernon 66-52. Jonathan Mitchell, New York State Mr. Basketball, pitched in 16 points, as did Mike Coburn in the Knights’ comeback from a 10- point deficit at the start of the fourth quarter. Mount Vernon went on a 12-0 run to take the lead with 4:19 remaining. but the game was far from over.

Bears celebrate the great efforts of bygone season

Nucleus of players to return next year on a mission

By RICHARD A. ROSS

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY—Forget the notion that bears hibernate in winter. At Tri-Valley, that’s when they roar out of the den and onto the hardwood. In fact, these Bears never sleep.

With the basketball season just barely over (no pun intended), the modified, junior varsity and varsity players, and cheerleaders, parents and community members gathered on March 21 at the Neversink Fire House to pay tribute to the Herculean efforts of the bygone campaign, and to set their sights on doing better in the year to come.

Ross two-time winner of Golden Media Award

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY—Richard Ross, sports editor of The River Reporter has won the Golden Media Award from the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc. for the second year in a row. The presentation, made at a banquet celebrating the achievements of the Tri-Valley High School’s basketball players and cheerleaders on March 21, came as a surprise to Ross, who knew that coach Jason Semo had nominated him but did not know that he had been awarded the honor.

Last year, Ross was selected as BCANY’s first recipient of the Golden Media Award based on a nominating letter from Sullivan West’s head basketball coach Rick Ellison.
