Architecture tours to feature scenic byway

SULLIVAN COUNTY, NY — This year’s annual Sullivan County Architectural Bus Tour, to take place on Saturday, April 29, is themed “A Tour Along Historic Route 97, the Scenic Byway.” The bus will depart from Barryville and take in the hamlets of Barryville, Pond Eddy, Glen Spey, Highland Lake, Eldred, Yulan and Minisink Ford.

There will be two identical five-hour trips, in the morning and afternoon, both departing from Barryville. The morning tour takes place from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., and the afternoon tour from 1:30 to 6:30 p.m. There will be a 30-minute walking tour of Barryville at the conclusion of each bus tour.

Historically and architecturally, the focus will be on the D&H Canal, the Erie Railroad and the resort industry that grew up around it, the legacies of multi-millionaires William F. Proctor, George Ross Mackenzie and Leon deVenoge (including the Mackenzie mansions that remain in Glen Spey), the Delaware Aqueduct (a.k.a. the Roebling Bridge) and the Battle of Minisink (Revolutionary War).

There will be a reception and an interior tour of a historic home, the bed and breakfast “ECCE,” catered by the Fifth Floor Farm Kitchen of Jeffersonville.

The price per ticket is $45 until April 15, $50 thereafter.
