Ross two-time winner of Golden Media Award

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — Richard Ross, sports editor of The River Reporter has won the Golden Media Award from the Basketball Coaches Association of New York, Inc. for the second year in a row. The presentation, made at a banquet celebrating the achievements of the Tri-Valley High School’s basketball players and cheerleaders on March 21, came as a surprise to Ross, who knew that coach Jason Semo had nominated him but did not know that he had been awarded the honor.

In his nominating letter, Semo wrote of Ross: “His coverage of high school basketball goes far beyond the average game summary... He is a reporter that takes pride in knowing what the ‘big games’ are, as well as maintaining a sense of responsibility for covering the struggling teams in an uplifting manner… He is a brilliant photographer. His pictures continually capture the entire game, as they depict the energy of the crowd, the focus of the team and the determination of the coaches... Much more, his work has served as a foundation for building a sense of pride in Section Nine basketball. He gives all athletes, teams and communities something to be proud of.”

Last year, Ross was selected as BCANY’s first recipient of the Golden Media Award based on a nominating letter from Sullivan West’s head basketball coach Rick Ellison.
