Dinner with a jazz legend

SCRANTON, PA — The Northeast Theatre presents internationally renowned jazz pianist John Coates Jr., in concert at 8:00 p.m. on April 21 at The Performance Space at the Jermyn. A dinner with Coates at 6:00 p.m., by Carey’s Catering, will precede the concert. Seating at the dinner is limited, and dinner tickets, which cost $60, must be purchased by April 17.

John Coates Jr. is a native of Trenton, NJ. He graduated magna cum laude from Rutgers University where he holds a degree in Romance languages. He began playing in local clubs when he was 14, recorded his first LP for Savoy Records while still a senior in high school, and went on to perform on the Steve Allen, Mike Douglas and Merv Griffin TV shows. He has played with Charlie Ventura, is a regular at Deer Head Inn, has played throughout Europe, Japan, Canada and the United States, and has recorded numerous albums and CDs. John now resides in New York City.

His inventive and whimsical approach to jazz piano has also earned him raves from critics. Says the New York Post, “Listening to him invariably turns out to be great fun. Coates sounds only like Coates.” And from Billboard Magazine: “Jazz pianist John Coates’ beautifully recorded, long awaited offering is choked with treasures... a jaw dropper of elegant invention.”

Those who do not choose to dine may attend the concert at 8:00 p.m. for $38. All proceeds benefit The Northeast Theatre on the corner of Wyoming at 326 Spruce, second floor, in downtown Scranton.
