Four county girls teams vie in Section 9 tourney
By RICHARD A. ROSS
LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY By the time this paper hits the streets, the fate of four county girls teams in the Section 9 basketball tournament will be infinitely clearer.
Class B Sullivan West, the tournaments number two seed, will take on the winner of third-seeded Marlboro and sixth-seeded James I. ONeill. The Lady Bulldogs will play that quarterfinal at Sullivan County Community College on March 2 at 6:00 p.m. Should the Bulldogs advance, they will face either fourth-seeded John S. Burke Catholic, fifth-seeded Pine Plains or number-one seeded Highland in the finals at SUNY New Paltz on March 5 at 3:30 p.m.
A much-anticipated third game of the season against Burke is a distinct possibility.
Number-four-seeded Eldred is scheduled to take on the Class D top-seed, Chapel Field, on March 1 at Sullivan County Community College at 5:00 p.m.
On the other side of the Class D bracket, Livingston Manor, the tournaments three seed, will take on number-two-seeded John A. Coleman Catholic on March 1 at 5:00 p.m. at SUNY New Paltz. The winners of each of the two games will advance to the finals at SUNY New Paltz on March 4 at 3:00 p.m.
Number-six-seeded Monticello traveled to take on the third-seeded Wallkill Panthers on February 28. The winner will advance to encounter number-two-seeded Red Hook in the semifinals at SUNY New Paltz on March 3 at 6:45 p.m. The Class A girls finals will be held on March 6 at SUNY New Paltz at 5:30 p.m. Consult www.riverreportersports.com for updates and photos from many of these games.
