Scrappy Dawgs beat Spartans for Moran title

Teams exhibit Blue-collar effort but Dawgs get clutch in the end

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—Far above the confines of the noisy gym where Sullivan West was battling S.S. Seward in a tremendous early season game, Billy Moran may well have looking down from the celestial reaches of heaven and smiling on December 12.

The iconic scholar athlete, who graduated from Delaware Valley and whose life was tragically cut short by a drunk driver, would have marveled at two things. First, that his name is still alive in Sullivan West’s opening basketball tournament and second, and even more significantly, that the essence of what he stood for as an outstanding scholar- athlete still lives on in the players that followed him 24 years after his death.

Five new players—Bionca Colton, Desirae Dutcher, Chelsea Ademac, Denene Irwan and Kayla Quinones—are joining five veterans—Heather Sherwood, Megan Ellison, Jackie Trotti, Katie Portz and Rose Curtis, on their quest for a section title.

With only seven out of 10 players eligible on December 1, Livingston Manor started its season in the Eldred holiday tournament. They faced Chapel Field in the first round. The Lady Wildcats gave their best effort, but succumbed to the Lady Lions’ defense in a final score of 52 to 42.

By RICHARD A. ROSS

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY—After being victimized in the opening round by S.S. Seward and Sullivan West, Liberty and Fallsburg entered the Billy Moran Tip Off consolation game determined to display a better brand of basketball.

Mission accomplished.

Bringing a better team concept onto the hardwood would certainly assure both teams a better chance to win. To the delight of coaches Dave Slater from Liberty and Paul Marsden from Fallsburg, that team effort was on display far more frequently than in the opening round.
