Schiff and Chaboty sworn in as sheriff and undersheriff

MONTICELLO, NY — County clerk George Cooke administered the oath of office to Sullivan County’s newest sheriff, Michael Schiff. The swearing-in ceremony took place on December 7 in the Sullivan County Legislative chambers. In the same ceremony, Schiff announced veteran state trooper Eric Chaboty as his undersheriff.

After Schiff’s oath was completed, Chaboty was sworn into office by his wife Tammi, a notary public. A sergeant based at the Liberty state police barracks, Chaboty has been the treasurer for the eastern NY division of the State Trooper’s Police Benevolent Association, in charge of a $2 million budget. He will retire from his state position to work with Schiff at the sheriff’s department.

Schiff said he and Chaboty have “fought many battles together” in the past. Both have been active in the trooper’s union.

Both men will assume their posts at midnight on January 1, 2006, when outgoing Sheriff Dan Hogue retires.
