MIDDLETOWN, NY — Sullivan West’s Brian Hubbert was a football force to be reckoned with. A fiery defensive lineman, Hubbert created havoc for Bulldog adversaries on his way to recording 13 season sacks and over 100 tackles.

The Section 9 Football Coaches Association duly noted his accomplishments when they named him Class C/D Lineman of the Year. Hubbert was the emotional leader and a major cog in the capturing of the Section 9 Class C title.

Other Bulldogs selected for the All-Section Class C/D Team included Brett Youmans, who led the Bulldogs by scoring 89 points. A talented kicker and punter, Youmans also made his mark as an effective receiver.

Running back Jim Erlwein was another selection to the Class C/D All-Section Team. Erlwein rushed for 916 yards, averaging 83.3 yards per game. He gained over 200 yards in a game against Onteora. A feared defender, Erlwein had 144 tackles. Both Hubbert and Erlwein were additionally selected for the All-Section Team of players from all athletic classes.

The Football Coaches Association also chose Sullivan West’s Steve Daley for the Class C/D team. Daley’s role as the team’s second leading rusher was key. He scored 42 points and was second in tackles. Daley’s late entry into a league title game against Tri-Valley almost turned the tide in the Bulldogs’ overtime loss to the Bears.

Quarterback Jim Moloney was also selected to the Class C/D team. Moloney passed for 990 yards and accounted for 1,164 total yards of offense. He was regarded as one of the section’s top passers.

Honorable mention status went to running back/ receiver Jason Leewe, receiver Paul Pitz and nose guard Ben Tonjes.

Other area gridders named to the Class C/D included Eldred tackle George Fountain and Eldred running back Jonathan Counts, who rushed for over 1,400 yards and scored 17 touchdowns.

Tri-Valley’s stellar quarterback, Joe Garigliano, was named to the Class C/D team and the All-Section Team. Garigliano completed 71 of 143 passes for 1,080 yards and threw for 12 touchdowns. The Wendy’s High School Heisman national finalist averaged 15.21 yards per completion.

Other Bears chosen for the Class C/D team included wide receiver James Connolly, the Bears’ leading scorer, team kicker and most productive receiver. Connolly scored nine touchdowns and averaged 17.8 yards per catch. Connolly had 24 receptions for 428 yards.

Danny Walter, another standout from Tri-Valley, was another Class C/D selection. Walter, who often played behind Tri-Valley’s Danny Knox, was a defensive standout. He intercepted four passes and was in on 43 tackles.

Sullivan West coach Ron Bauer was selected as the Class C/D Coach of the Year. Bauer is one of the section’s leaders in career wins. This year, he led his team to its second consecutive Section 9 title. Last year, the Bulldogs were Class B champs and this year they captured Class C.
