EDRIS B. ARTIS

MANHATTAN, NY — Edris B. Artis, a frequent visitor of Narrowsburg, died Friday, November 25, 2005 at Cabrini Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation in Manhattan. She was 67.

The daughter of the late Ethan and Joy Murray Brown, she was born April 21, 1938 in Wadsworth, OH.

She was a graduate of Hunter College, New York City where she received her masters in social work. She belonged to numerous clubs and organizations devoted to social justice. She was a retired psychiatric social worker.

She is survived by her husband of 35 years, William Artis; two daughters, Alicia Bright of CA and Dr. Debra Bright of Richmond, IN; three sons, Michael Bright of Boston, MA, Kevin Olu Artis of New York City and Aderemi Artis of Hamilton; two sisters, Crystal Harting of Buffalo and Patricia Smith of Akron, OH; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

Services will be private and at the convenience of the family.

Interment will be in the Glen Cove Cemetery in Narrowsburg, NY.


MARILYN A. CALANGELO

LIVINGSTON MANOR, NY — Marilyn A. Calangelo died Tuesday, November 15, 2005 at the Seelig Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. She was 69.

She was the daughter of the late Douglas and Mary VanSteenburg of Turnwood.

Calangelo is survived by four daughters, Margaret and her husband Harold Roberts of Livingston Manor, Martha and her husband John Kluge of Greenwood, LA, Kathy and her husband Terry Simmons of Livingston Manor, and Ann Marie Dennis and her companion, Scott Conley of Roscoe; two sons, Peter and his wife Janet of Narrowsburg, and Anthony Calangelo and his companion Linda Dano of Syracuse; six grandchildren, Erin Marie Roberts and Jessie Simmons of Livingston Manor, Claire King and Kristin McAloney of Greenwood, LA, and Brendon and Adrianna Calangelo of Narrowsburg; and two great-grandchildren, Rachel and Christopher of Greenwood, LA, and another great-grandchild who is expected in July.

A memorial service was held on November 19 at the Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor.

Interment of the remains was made in the Lew Beach Cemetery.

MARIE TERESA CORTESE

NARROWSBURG, NY — Marie Teresa Cortese, a longtime resident of Narrowsburg, passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2005 in Port Orange, FL. She was 94.

The daughter of the late John and Elizabeth D’Agustino Monaco, she was born on May 30, 1911, in New York City.

A housewife, she was a former member of St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg.

She is survived by one daughter, Margurite Schroeder of Brooklyn, NY; five grandchildren; ten great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, the late Vincent Cortese, Sr., who passed away September 23, 1998; a daughter, Delia Cortese; a son, Vincent Cortese, Jr.; and two brothers, Nicholas and Joseph Monaco.

Friends are invited to cal on Friday, December 2, 2005 from 7:00 to 9:00 p.m. at Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at St. Francis Xavier Roman Catholic Church in Narrowsburg at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, December 3. The Reverend William Scully, OFM will officiate.

Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

MARYANN GOSCH

SHOHOLA, PA — Mary Ann Gosch, a resident of Walker Lake in Shohola and a lifelong area resident, died Monday, November 21, 2005, at Morristown General Hospital in Morristown, NJ. She was 66.

The daughter of the late Thomas McCann and Agnes Kohl McCann, she was born on December 9, 1938 in Port Jervis, NY.

She worked as a legal secretary for Jerome Cohen, Attorney at Law in Port Jervis, NY, until her retirement. She was a member of the Milford Valley Quilters Guild, Walker Lake Ladies Club, Red Hat Society, D & H Square Dancers, Dingman’s Dancers and “Our Crowd.” She was also a member of the Busy Bees, the Silver Needles and the Golden Age Club of Milford.

She is survived by her husband, Paul W. Gosch at home; a son, Daniel Gosch and his wife Krista of Matamoras; three daughters, Debra Palmisano and her husband Daniel of Tobyhanna, Heidi Estok and her husband Erik of Port Jervis, and Jennifer Brooks of Layton, NJ; a sister, Helen Kline of Port Jervis; two brothers, Robert McCann of Elkton, VA and William McCann of Broadway, VA; seven grandchildren, Steven, Anthony, Melissa, Nina, Joshua, Jenna and Mason; two step-grandchildren, Tyler and Danielle; two great-grandchildren, Bobby and Collin; and several nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at the Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis at a later date with the Reverend Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.

Interment will be private.


RITA L. MOORE

BEACH LAKE, PA — Rita L. Moore, a resident of Beach Lake, died at her daughter’s home in Beach Lake on Tuesday, November 22, 2005 after an illness. She was 90.

The daughter of the late Charles and Bessie Warring Gevert, she was born in East Berlin Township. She attended the East Berlin Grade School and Beach Lake High School, and graduated from Honesdale High School in 1932. She worked for 37 years at the Katz Underware Company in Honesdale.

Moore was a member of the Beach Lake United Methodist Church for 78 years. She was a devoted grandmother and great-grandmother and loved baking cookies for her family.

She is survived by a daughter, Janet M. Orr of Beach Lake; a son, Jerry and his wife Beth Moore of Beach Lake; seven grandchildren, Kathy King and her husband Leon of White Lake, Stephen Orr of Virginia Beach, John Orr and his wife Mary Lou of Pittsburg, Michael Orr and his wife Claudia of New Tripoli, Shaun Moore and his wife Stacey of Bow, NH, Dianna Kurras and her husband Tom of Hendersonville, TN, and Joe Orr and his wife Susan of St. Louis, MO; 15 great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, James A. Moore in 1978; four brothers, Clarence Wallace, Harold and Walter Gevert; and six sisters, Ethel Frey, Jessie Rice, Ruth Gevert, Hazel Thomas and Esther Olver.

Services were held November 27 in the Beach Lake United Methodist Church with Reverend Dr. Gordon E. Weightman and Reverend Reese Warring officiating.

Interment will be in the Beach Lake Cemetery.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Beach Lake Volunteer Fire Company or the Beach Lake United Methodist Church.


REVEREND NEIL A. PADDEN

BUTLER, NJ — The Reverend Neil A. Padden, O.F.M., of St. Anthony Friary, died Sunday, November 6, 2005 in Butler. He was 82.

He was a professed Franciscan friar for 53 years and a Catholic priest for 50 years.

A native of Wilkes-Barre, PA, he served as an Army Air Corps radio operator and mechanic in World War II, India-Burma Theater, attaining the rank of corporal. He entered the Franciscan Order in 1951 and was ordained to the priesthood in 1955. In New Jersey he was pastor of Assumption Church in Woodridge from 1979 to 1985. He also assisted at St. Bonaventure Church in Paterson, NJ from 2000 to 2005. He was a religious supervisor and pastor at St. Joseph Church in Wilkes-Barre from 1967 to 1976. He was the pastor of Francis Xavier Church in Narrowsburg, NY from 1994 to 1996 and religious supervisor of St. Anthony Friary in St. Petersburg, Florida from 1985 to 1994.

He is survived by his Franciscan brothers and two sisters, Margaret Goodsir of Port St. Lucie, FL and Mary Moan of Fort Pierce FL.

A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Thursday, November 10 at St. Anthony’s Church in Butler.

Interment is at the Mount Calvary Cemetery in Butler.


MALCOM ‘ANGUS’ ROSS JR

TYLER HILL, PA — Malcom “Angus” Ross Jr. died suddenly on Sunday, November 20, 2005 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale. He was 65.

The son of the late Malcolm and Camille Miller Ross, he was born December 20, 1939. A longtime resident of the area, he was a graduate of the University of Miami. He worked for the National Park Service for over 35 years until his retirement in 1998. While working for the park service, he was stationed at the Everglades, Blue Ridge Parkway, Lake Mead, Shenandoah, Assateague Island and the Upper Delaware Scenic and Recreational River. Prior to his employment, he served in the Coast Guard. After retiring, he became involved with FEMA as a disaster assistance employee and responded numerous times to floods and hurricane-related disasters. He was also a member for Habitat for Humanity.

He is survived by his wife of 23 years, JoAnne Merritt at home; a son, Mark and his wife Selena; a grandson, Gavin; a daughter, Shannon and her husband Lorenzo; a granddaughter Sophia; two brothers, David and Sandy; and a niece, Amy.

Services were held on November 29 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home.

Cremation was at the Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald.
