Eldred answers Congress
In response to the Child Nutrition and WIC Reauth-orization Act of 2004, ECS has established a wellness committee to address the health and nutritional needs of district students.
The committee discusses issues, such as cafeteria offerings and changes to the physical education (PE) program, monthly.
The committee is worth its weight in gold, Superintendent Dr. Ivan Katz said.
A provision of the federal act requires school districts to have a wellness policy in place for 2006.
In ECS, the committee started this year, a fact Katz is proud of.
We are ahead of the curve, Katz said.
If we give them [students] healthier options, there is no question that it will be positive.
To Kelly Doherty, an ECS PE and health instructor, the introduction of a wellness committee is a step in the right direction.
As a nation, we are not doing well with obesity. [Education] needs to start at the school level.
