Local harriers compete at Footlocker regional
Ryan finishes behind Blood but will defend her title in San Diego
By RICHARD A. ROSS
BRONX, NY The big story at the 2005 Footlocker Northeast Regional race on November 26 was the touted match-up between defending national champion Aislinn Ryan of Warwick and long-term friend and race nemesis Nicole Blood of Saratoga Springs. Blood, who now runs as an independent, has not raced Ryan this year.
Ryan took the early lead in the race and the two took turns leading the pack and each other before Blood (17:41.8) pulled ahead to beat Ryan (17:50.0).
The two will face each other in the nationals, which will be held in San Diego on December 10. Last year, Blood won the Northeast regional by five seconds over Ryan but Ryan blew away her nearest competitor in the national final by eight seconds with her blistering time of 17:31. Blood (18:34) finished 21st.
The top 10 finishers from the seeded boys and girls races qualified to go on to the nationals. Bloods former teammates Lindsey Ferguson (17:54.7), who finished fourth, and Hannah Davidson (18:07.4), who took ninth also qualified. Ryan bested the latter two in the New York State Public High School Athletic Association (NYSPHAA) championships. Last year, Ryan beat Blood at the nationals. Cornwalls Lynne Mundy (19:15.3) finished in 47th place, missing out on nationals in her last try as a high school runner.
Running in the seeded boys, Monticellos Brendan Devine (17:11.6) finished 144th, while Tri-Valleys Derek Smith (17:48.6) took 195th place. Teammate Jonathan Huppke (19:53.6) was 259th, and fellow Bear Justin Tomkins (22:17.1) finished 276th. Sullivan Wests Matt Layman (19:21,3) finished 125th in the sophomore boys race. Tri-Valleys Nick Demman (18:51.3) took 98th in the same event.
In the senior race, Sullivan Wests Trevor Kreznar (18:39.4) came in 89th. Jessica Wagner (22:23.1) finished 54th. Teammates Amanda Ward (22:54.2) and Eleanor Bryan (25:51.2) finished 65th and 104th respectively.
In the sophomore girls race, Tri-Valleys Courtney Roosa (21:28.5) garnered 42nd. Sullivan Wests Chelsea Schadt (22:56.1) came in 85th and Charlotte Peters (23:16.9) took 92nd in the freshmans girls run. Tri-Valleys Rachel Sanborn was the countys only medalist. She finished 23rd in the freshman girls race with a time of 21:17.4.
