Sullivan West grad wows sociologists

Nathan Bucar (right), presents his sociology paper to the New York State Sociological Association at Wells College in Aurora, NY, with Associate Professor of Sociology Bill Skipper (left). Bucar, the son of Elizabeth Bucar of Jeffersonville, NY and a graduate of Sullivan West High School, received the association’s Outstanding Undergraduate Paper Award. Bucar’s paper, titled “Laborers v. Capitalists and Core v. Periphery: the Dynamics of Global Capitalism,” was described by judges as outstanding in terms of the significance of its topic and how well it was organized, written and argued. The topic fit with the conference theme of “Deepening Inequalities,” and judges praised Bucar’s grasp of the theories of Marx and Wallerstein and his application of those theories to the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA).
