Eldred breaks the hex and beats Bears in their den

Eight-year drought ends versus Tri-Valley, as Yellowjackets stay perfect at 5-0

By RICHARD A. ROSS

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY—To be successful in its October 1 game against Eldred, all Tri-Valley had to do was follow the script for the past two years. Get behind early and win the game late. But this year Eldred (5-0) had other ideas.

All week long, the Yellowjackets had rigorously prepped for this non-league battle against the Bears, which they viewed as payback for past losses and an important acid test for their upcoming October 6 showdown with Chester. Eldred, which is a large, physical team, loaded with hungry upper classmen, had a new script to write and it didn’t take them long to pen the first scene.

Lady Bulldogs do well against state-ranked teams; VanWagenen takes fourth in boys’ race

By RICHARD A. ROSS

TULLY, NY—The results weren’t quite what they were last year when the Sullivan West girls won the Tully Invitational but then again, state-ranked Canastota wasn’t there. Currently unranked, the Lady Dawgs will no doubt move into the state rankings after beating eighth-ranked Jordan-Elbridge and just being edged out by Pulaski, the seventh-ranked Class C team in the state.

Bulldogs put up a heck of a fight

JEFFERSONVILLE, NY—Don’t let the score of Sullivan West’s 5-1 loss to Division IV co-leader James I. O’Neill fool you. This game was a battle royale. The steadily improving Lady Bulldogs got the better of the early play in a game that was delayed substantially by O’Neill’s tardy arrival.

Winning balls, passing well and good defense got the Lady Bulldogs the early lead as Stevie VanWagenen drove in a shot past O’Neill goalie Katie Lewis with 34:41 remaining in the first half. Jessica Armstrong provided the assist.
