Tall limb crashes into Glen Cove cemetery

NARROWSBURG, NY — A tree limb that fell on the Glen Cove Cemetery during a September 29 windstorm “made a hell of a racket,” neighbors along Kirk Road told caretaker Charlie Wieland.

Roughly 65 feet tall, the limb crashed into the cemetery and knocked over a monument. Wieland started working to remove the limb on Friday, September 30.

“Two thirds of the tree came down in the storm. You could see a rotten spot where it broke off. I’m going to keep plugging away and it should be cleared up pretty soon,” the caretaker said. This week, he’ll be taking out the smaller pieces of wood, which he plans to use in his fireplace this winter.

The one monument that was damaged in the storm will be repaired when the brush is cleared, Wieland said. The Glen Cove Cemetery Association is working with the Tusten Town Board to remove the remaining body of the tree limb.

The heavily leaf-laden branches of the tree will either be taken away by the town or chipped up. The cemetery is still open to visitors.
