Harvest days in Hancock

HANCOCK, NY — Vintage baseball played by the rules of 1898 will highlight the second annual Hancock Harvest Days on October 7 and 8 in downtown Hancock. Competing for the Honest Eddie Murphy trophy on Saturday afternoon at Hancock’s Firemen’s Park will be the Hancock Nine, the Roxbury Nine and the Hamden Polecats. Hancock is the birthplace of the legendary Eddie Murphy, who played 11 years for the Philadelphia Athletics, the Chicago White Sox and the Pittsburgh Pirates, and was nicknamed “Honest Eddie” for not being implicated in the “Black Sox” World Series scandal of 1919.

Other Harvest Days activities will take place in the center of the village at the square surrounding the former Charlie’s Great American. There will be pumpkin painting and hayrides at Hancock Elementary School, followed by a wine-tasting, chili-feed and music by the Kurpil Family Singers at the square on Friday.

Saturday’s line-up includes a tractor and antique car parade through the village. Horse and buggy rides, a chicken barbecue and a charity pie auction by the Hancock Rotary are slated for Saturday afternoon. The Uphill String Band will perform at Saturday night’s square dance on Wheeler Street adjacent to the square.

Harvest Days activities also include a scarecrow contest for village residents sponsored by the Hancock Area Chamber of Commerce.
