Roscoe edges Bears for first win of the season

By KOURTNI GUZZO

GRAHAMSVILLE, NY — Playing soccer against Tri-Valley has been an uphill battle for the Lady Blue Devils for the past few years. But fortune changed hands on September 9 as the Roscoe-Tri-Valley game ended in a Roscoe win, with a final score of 2-1.

Roscoe struck first with a goal from senior Kendra Harris, assisted by senior Kourtni Guzzo. The entire Roscoe squad was stunned to have opened the scoring, given the team’s trying history against the Bears. The first-half ended 1-0 in Roscoe’s favor.

In the second-half, Tri-Valley’s Kayla Scannell and Maria Jeltsch combined to tie the score. Once the score was all tied up, the intensity level grew quickly as both teams started running faster and expending more effort.

Late in the second half, Harris scored her second goal of the game. Eighth grader Taylor DeVantier recorded the assist, which put Roscoe up 2-1. Roscoe’s defense held Tri-Valley (1-2) for the remaining five minutes as the Blue Devils (1-1) recorded their first victory of the year. Earlier in the week, Tri-Valley beat Ellenville 2-1 but was blanked by Liberty 3-0.
