National Preparedness Month proclaimed

HONESDALE, PA — “This couldn’t be more timely,” said Anthony Herzog, chairman of the Wayne County Commissioners upon approving a proclamation on September 1, which names November “National Preparedness Month” in Wayne County.

Wayne County Emergency Management Agency Director Glen Gunuskey, who appeared at the meeting, encouraged passage of the proclamation.

Gunuskey, who has been holding seminars on preparedness for years, highlighted the urgent need for the county and its residents to be prepared in light of relief efforts in New Orleans and Biloxi in the aftermath of the Hurricane Katrina.

“It can happen here,” Gunuskey said.

The Emergency Management Office has copies of the PEMA (Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency) booklet “Pennsylvania Emergency Preparedness Guide” to be distributed to the public. “People can stop by the office and pick up a copy of this valuable source explaining what to do and where to go in these kinds of emergencies,” he said. Gunuskey’s office is in the basement of the Wayne County Court House on Court Street.

Gunuskey recommends residents become aware of three helpful websites: pema.state.pa.us, www.homelandsecurity.state.pa.us, and www.health.state.pa.us.
