Native American healing lore

DAMASCUS, PA — Nathaniel Whitmore, a local herbalist, will lead a nature walk on Saturday, August 27 at 10:00 a.m. at the Damascus Township Community Center. He will discuss the edible and medicinal properties of local plants and the beliefs and practices of Native American healing.

Native Americans not only understood how to use America’s native plants for food and medicine but were able to quickly adopt plants imported from Europe and elsewhere. Whitmore will focus on the Native Americans’ uses of local plants on Saturday’s walk. He will also discuss their theories of healing, shamanism and man’s place in nature.

The community center is located on Conklin Hill Road about a quarter mile off Route 371. Participants should meet near the parking lot prepared to walk along the trail that loops through the woods. In the event of rain, the walk will still be held but the discussion of Native American healing will be conducted in a pavilion behind the community center. Donations are welcome.
