DR. BENJAMIN BAKER
JEFFERSONVILLE, NY Dr. Benjamin Baker, a resident of Jeffersonville, passed away on Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at St. Lukes Hospital in Chesterfield, MO. He was 91.
The son of the late Abraham and Fanny Gotkin Ginsberg, he was born on May 29, 1914 in the Bronx, NY.
A retired professor and former chairman of the political science department at Rutgers University in New Brunswick, NJ, he graduated from the College of the City of New York and obtained a Ph.D. from Columbia University. A veteran of World War II, he worked for the U.S. Department of Agriculture in Puerto Rico.
Survivors include two sons, Milton and Harvey; five grandchildren, Jennifer, Adam, Lisa, David and Sara Baker; and the family of Dorothy Weiss.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Sophie Baker (née Hahn); and his second wife, Dorothy Weiss; and one brother, George.
Service was held at Herbert C. Bryant Funeral Home in Livingston Manor, NY.
Interment will be at Agudas Achim Cemetery in Livingston Manor.
Walter Jim Brown
SPARROWBUSH, NY Walter Jim Brown, a resident of Sparrowbush and a lifetime area resident, died on Thursday, August 11, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital. He was 48.
The son of James and Shirley (Hendershot) Brown, he was born on April 26, 1957 in Middletown, NY.
Brown was a former industrial mechanic at C&D Charter Power in Huguenot.
A family statement read: To Jim, his family was his first priority and his children made him very proud each day. He also loved to ride his Harley and would say a bad day in the rain is better than a good day at work.
Survivors include his wife of 30 years, Elizabeth Liz Kortright Brown at home; his father, James Brown of Huguenot, NY; his mother, Shirley Brown of Huguenot; two sons, Jason and his wife Dawn of Port Jervis and Joseph of Middletown; a daughter Bethann OBrien and her husband Steven of Port Jervis; three brothers, Larry and his wife Colleen of Circleville, NY, Peter and his wife Lisa of Waco, TX and Jason and his wife Donna of Cuddebackville, NY; a sister, Laura McKee and her husband David of Micco, FL; a sister-in-law, Tina Cokelette and her husband Lee of Matamoras, PA; three grandchildren, Zachary Brown, Kaitlynn Brown and Hailey Brown; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by his brother, Mark Brown, who died on July 8, 2002.
Services were held at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Reverend Robert E. Foster officiating.
Interment will be at the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowbush, NY.
CARL MONTGOMERY BUCHANAN
MATAMORAS, PA Carl Montgomery Buchanan, a lifelong Matamoras resident, died Sunday, July 24, 2005 at the Westchester Medical Center in Valhalla, NY. He was 74.
The son of the late Homer and Lillian E. Smith Buchanan, he was born April 5, 1931 in Matamoras.
A retired cable splicer for Verizon Telephone in Port Jervis, and a veteran of the U.S. Air Force having served during the Korean conflict, he was a member of the National Rifle Association, the American Legion in Philadelphia, the Buxton, Maine Rod and Gun Club, the International Brotherhood Electrical Workers Union and the Day Lilies Society.
A family statement read: Carl was an avid gardener, outdoorsman, hunter and fisherman. He enjoyed spending many years at his second home in Hollis, Maine.
Survivors include his wife, Loretta M. Koenig Buchanan at home; one son, Carl and his wife Marie of Milford; one brother, James of Matamoras; one granddaughter, Tammy Allison and her husband William; three great-grandchildren: Cody, Taylor and Olivia; and several nieces and nephews. He is also survived by Russell and Linda Koenig Otto, Robert and Beth Koenig Emerson of Sparrowbush, Lawrence and Jean Koenig of Destin, FL and George Rink of Sparrowbush.
He was predeceased by his brother, Homer L. Buchanan Jr.
Interment was in Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowbush, NY with the Reverend Nancy Vonderhorst officiating.

RONALD PYE DUTTON
TAFTON, PA Ronald Pye Dutton, a resident of Lynndale, Tafton, died Saturday August 6, 2005 at home. He was 88.
The son of the late Joseph Percie Dutton and Margurite (Pye) Dutton, he was born on June 12, 1917 in West Chester.
Dutton worked as an electrician for Dupont Chemical until his retirement 26 years ago.
Survivors include his wife of 65 years, the former Valeria Margaret Beck; two daughters, Barbara Thorp Jentry of Philadelphia and Margaret L. Minter of Hawley; one son, Ronald of Greentown; a brother, Joseph S. of Lake Wales, FL; eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren.
Services will be held at the convenience of the family.
ALFRED G. HUGHES
CALLICOON CENTER, NY Alfred G. Hughes, a resident of Callicoon Center and Wolverhampton, England, died Monday, August 8, 2005 at Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. He was 87.
The son of the late Gilbert and Mabel Cuttle Hughes, he was born April 12, 1918 in Bristol, England. He was married for 43 years to the late Dorothy Dunkley.
Hughes was a member of the Church of England, a union member of AEEU and was an avid Wolverhampton Wanderers fan.
Survivors include one daughter, Carol Quintyne of Callicoon Center, NY; three grandchildren, Melanie Mitch and her husband Elmore, Nicholas Quintnye and his fiancée Nancy and Stephanie Johannes and her husband Kris; three great-grandchildren, Sebastian Rios, Tristan Evans and Hope Elmore.
Hughes is predeceased by a sister, Margaret Henner and his son-in-law Maurice Quintnye.
Services were held at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg.
Memorial donations maybe made to the Jeffersonville Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
ARTHUR J. REYNOLDS
LACKAWAXEN, PA Arthur J. Reynolds, a resident of Lackawaxen, died August 7, 2005 in the Brighten at Julia Ribuado Senior Care Center after an illness.
The son of the late David E. and Florence Shaner Reynolds, he was born in Pottstown. He was of the Christian Science faith.
A Navy veteran, Reynolds worked as a steam fitter in Philadelphia.
Survivors include his wife, the former Helen E. Fox, at home; a daughter, Sandra L. Petty and her husband Louis J. Jerry of Mesa, AZ; his sons, Michael of Boyertown and Patrick of Stroudsberg; his sisters, Phoebe Rothermal and her husband Robert of Millsboro, DE, Reita Simmons and her husband Gordon of Sacramento, CA and Marie Hartline and her husband David of Douglassville; his grandchildren, Brian Lewiski, Dawn Infante and Lee Reynolds; and four great-grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 10 at the family residence.
IDA MARY SHAUGER
SPARROWBUSH, NY Ida Mary Shauger, a resident of Sparrowbush and a longtime area resident, died Wednesday, August 10, 2005 at Middletown Park Manor. He was 77.
The daughter of Daniel and Sarah Mae Schauger, she was born on July 17, 1928 in Ogdensburg, NJ.
A family statement said: Mom was a very loving, giving lady who always wanted to help others. She gave of herself to family an friends alike.
Survivors include eight children and their families: Diane Williams of Sparrowbush, grandson Tom Guerriere of Reno, NV, great-grandson Tyler Guerriere and his mom Tammy Filardi of LaGrangeville; Carol Struble and her husband Lyn of Middletown, grandson Scott Struble and wife Melissa, granddaughter Alexis Kirschner of Slate Hill, predeceased by granddaughter, Melissa Lyn Struble; Wanda Schumaci and her husband Michael, grandchildren Blair and Michael all of Greenville; Terry Brunell and fiancé Tim Griffith of Sparrowbush; John Shauger of Sparrowbush; David Brunell and his wife Diane, grandchildren David Brunell Jr., Ruben Parto, Vicki Irving, Jeffrey Kinney, great-granddaughter Tatiana Parto all of Port Jervis; Jospeh Brunell of Middletown, grandson David Halls of Paterson, NJ.; Daniel Brunell his fiancée Kelly Shannon, granddaughter Sarah Ann all of Sparrowbush. She is survived by a brother Wesley Shauger and his wife Mamie of Franklin, NJ. She was predeceased by four sisters and three brothers. Several nieces and nephews survive.
Services were held at Knight-Auchmoody Funeral Home in Port Jervis with Melvin Millar officiating. Interment will take place at the Ridgebury Cemetery in Rudgebury, NY.

NETTIE ALICE SWENDSEN
BEACH LAKE, PA Nettie Alice Swendsen, a resident of Beach Lake, died peacefully on August 12, 2005 at Woodlands Manor in Waymart. She was 89.
The daughter of the late John A. Tyler and his wife Articea B. Conklin, she was born March 1, 1916 in Milanville.
She married Richard E. Swendsen on September 21, 1935 and they left Wayne County in 1941 to begin farming in Sussex, NJ until 1952. Upon returning to Wayne County, they purchased a dairy farm in Beach Lake and farmed there until 1970 when they retired.
She was a charter member of the Beach Lake Fire Companys Ladies Auxiliary and a member of the Beach Lake United Methodist Church. She was also an active member of the General William Maxwell Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution in Belvidere, NJ.
She was employed as a cook at the Beach Lake School and worked at the Central House Resort in Beach Lake.
A family statement said: Netties craft work was exceptional. Her artistic creations included needlepoint, sewing and crocheting. She enjoyed camping, gardening, working with flowers and most of all, being in the company of friends and family.
Swendsen was predeceased by her husband who died January 20, 2000. They were the parents of one son, James Edward; and one daughter, the late Mary Ann Daniels. She was predeceased by four brothers and two sisters.
She is survived by a sister, Iona Irene Popielarz and many nieces, nephews, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
Services were held at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg, NY. Interment was at the Hillside Cemetery in Damascus.
DOROTHY M. (KYZER) WRIGHT
HAWLEY, PA Dorothy M. (Kyzer) Wright, a lifelong resident of Hawley, died unexpectedly at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale on August 12, 2005. She was 94.
The daughter of late Wesley and Sarah Watson Kyzer, she was born in Tafton, PA.
Wright worked as a seamstress at Ankes Mill in Hawley. She was a member of the St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church in Hawley and St. Pauls Willing Workers.
She was predeceased by her husband of 60 years, the late Harold W. Wright.
Wright is survived by her daughter, Elvera Hanf and her husband Robert of Hawley; two grandsons, David and his wife Linda of Lakeville and Michael and his wife Linda of Hawley; her great grandchildren, Christopher and Kimberly Hanf and Matthew, Christopher and Nicholas Brand; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held on Monday, August 15 at Teeters East Chapel in Hawley with the Reverend David Heckler, pastor of St. Pauls Evangelical Lutheran Church, officiating. Interment is in Green Gates Cemetery in Halwey.

ALGIE ZUKAS, JR.
BARRYVILLE, NY Algie Zukas, Jr., a resident of Barryville, died on Friday August 5, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. He was 44.
The son of the late Algie Zukas Sr. and Delia Friest Zukas, he was born April 15, 1961 in Great Neck, NY.
Zukas worked as a maintenance worker and a member of St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Yulan, NY.
A family statement said: Algie was a loving son and friend to many. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
He is survived by his mother, Delia Zukas of Barryville and several aunts, uncles and cousins.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held at St. Anthony of Padua R.C. Church in Yulan, NY with the reverend Anthony Moore officiating. Cremation followed at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, PA. Interment of the remains will be in the St. Anthonys Cemetery in Eldred, NY.
