Jessica Treat to appear in ‘First Hearings’

LIBERTY, NY — Jessica Treat, nationally-acclaimed author of “A Robber in the House” and “Not a Chance,” will appear in the First Hearings series at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, August 19 at The Liberty Free Theatre, 109 South Main Street.

Treat will read from new work and from her translations of Javier Campos. She has been called “a sly and subtle stylist with an uncanny ability to view the world from inside the character’s skin.” Novelist and critic, Jonathan Baumbach says “her stories offer the “elegant...mysterious pleasures” that put the reader in some “provocative, unremembered dream.” The Minneapolis Star-Tribune called her writing “superb...builds suspense and tension word by word,” and Mary Gaitskill calls her stories “wry magic.”

Paul Austin will present his short story, “The Trip to Bellows Falls” on the same bill with Ms. Treat. Recent audiences will recognize the protagonist, Harvey White, from Mr. Austin’s play, “Dreaming Angel.”

The audience is invited after the performance for food, drink and music. Admission is free.

Liberty Free Theatre has also announced that the run of “The Lives of Young People” has been extended to include August 17, 18, 20 and 21.
