Air plants and street fairs

CALLICOON, NY — Donna Glancey thinks that epiphytes are the best plants in the world.

“They feed themselves and you can forget about them for weeks on end,” Glancey said. Glancey was selling air plants on Callicoon’s Street Fair on July 30. Glancey, who maintains a website at airplants.com, has two stores in Florida and does fairs and festivals while staying at her summer home in Lew Beach, NY.

“All you have to do is soak this plant in water for about 15 minutes a week and it gets all the nutrients that it needs,” she said. “It will grow on anything, except dirt.”

According to organizer Bob Hofer, the annual Street Fair, sponsored by the Callicoon Business Association, has been growing as well. Sporting 52 booths, Hofer reported that the “there was pretty nice weather, and the vendors had a good time.”

The business association has 42 business members in the Callicoon area.
