Mushroom workshop at Lacawac

LAKE WALLENPAUPACK, PA — Pennsylvania Institute for Conservation Education will host a weekend workshop on Saturday and Sunday, August 20 and 21, “Plants of the Underworld I: Mushrooms and Their Allies,” at Lacawac Sanctuary. Jim Brett, naturalist and co-founder of the institute, will present this two-day, one-night event featuring identification of easily recognized forest mushrooms at the time of year when they are most prolific.

Saturday’s activities will feature learning how to distinguish edible from non-edible species, followed by a cooking class utilizing mushrooms collected during the day or dried earlier. Sunday will concentrate on a wider scope of collection and identification along with activities suitable for the classroom. A theme of the general natural history of eastern woodlands will be interwoven with the topic of mushroom ecology.

The tuition of $275 includes meals, shared accommodations, instruction and, if requested, course credit.
