Great weekend of softball benefits Cochecton Center’s playground fund

COCHECTON CENTER, NY—How’s this for a great midsummer recipe? Start with a great cause, namely raising money for Cochecton Center’s children’s playground. Blend in nine men’s softball teams itching for a chance to show their moxie. Combine with copious amounts of sunshine, add in a sprinkling of rain and spice up the mixture with some dicey controversy. Now serve up a great weekend of sizzling sports, non-stop drama and All-American fun with portions aplenty.

Chiefs send Forest City packing in playoff opener

NARROWSBURG, NY—Great pitching and timely hitting is the formula for success in baseball from little league right on up to the majors. Using that recipe, the Tusten Chiefs got off to a great start in their home opener of the Wayne County Teeners League Playoffs on July 16 by blanking Forest City 9-0. Brad Reimer, Logan Grishaber and Torin Frey combined to work the shutout. Reimer and Grishaber worked three innings apiece and Frey closed the game.

Diamond daydreams or nightmares

MONTICELLO, NY—For ABC Title, the defending champions of the Monticello Men’s Softball league, dreams of continuing their undefeated 11-0 season nearly turned into a nightmare. In the top of the seventh inning, after ABC Title’s lead had been cut down to a mere five runs, ABC third-basemen Bob Yakin belted a three-run inside-the-park homerun, silencing the hopes for comeback of the rallying Ma & Pa squad in a Men’s Modified Pitch softball regular season match-up on July 13 at Somerville Field in Monticello.
