Camp owner endures racial vandalism

By CHARLIE BUTERBAUGH

LACKAWAXEN, PA—Meil Helshkop reached out his hand and agreed to talk about the swastikas he found after returning to his summer camp for children on June 27.

The 48-year-old walked by the cabin where he’s staying with his assistant, Michal. The emblem of Adolf Hitler’s Nazi Party had been sprayed in white on the cabin’s red siding. Beside the swastika the vandal(s) had sprayed an anarchy sign.

Helshkop pointed out a swastika on a doormat, one on the window of a storm door and one on a nearby picnic table. The word “Nazi” had been sprayed on the table’s bench.

Narrowsburg celebrates the 4th

NARROWSBURG, NY—This river town’s annual Independence Day parade kept crowds happy once again as fire departments from Narrowsburg, Lava, Beach Lake, Cochecton, Jeffersonville and as far away as Chenango, NY drove their sparkling trucks down Main Street on Sunday, July 3.

Coinciding with the parade, the Narrowsburg Chamber of Commerce held its first July 4 street fair, which hosted about 25 vendors. Chamber Vice President Nancy Yoder said the street fair would be held again next year. The Narrowsburg Fire Department served almost 500 barbecue chicken dinners on Sunday afternoon and the fireworks at dusk were pronounced the “best ever” by the crowds that gathered along the interstate bridge and along the railroad tracks off Kirk Road.
