Concept of focus binds artists

MOUNTAINDALE, NY — The Mountaindale Art Center and Sculpture Garden will open a show of photographs by Jonathan Hyman and Arthur Nichols, “focus in / focus out,” with a reception on Sunday, July 10 from 2:00 to 4:00 p.m. at the center’s gallery, 58 Main Street.

Hyman, a resident of Smallwood, NY, makes use of recognizable images and objects from popular culture to create collages, which he photographs and manipulates. In the end, he said the photos “become painterly.”

“I think good art requires an investigation,” Hyman said.

Displayed beside each of Hyman’s works will be one of Nichols’ photographs. At right, Hyman’s “Joker” is placed above one of Nichols’ works.

Nichols, a resident of Woodbourne, NY, has been practicing black-and-white photography for more than 30 years. “I like a very simple approach. I do not employ complicated arrangements or tricks of composition,” Nichols said. While the artists’ compositions are different, Hyman said there are aspects that bind them. Both apprehend naturalistic forms.
