Edible and medicinal plant tour and discussion

MILANVILLE, PA — Take an educational stroll through Damascus Forest, on McCubbin’s Road in Milanville, with Nathaniel Whitmore on Sunday, June 26 at 2:00 p.m.

Learn not only about the edible and medicinal qualities of plants but also which plants are native and which were introduced from areas around the world and the impact of alien plants and native plant conservation.

Sometimes it is surprising to learn how many of the common wild plants are not native. The area’s flora changed dramatically as the native forests were cut down and settlers began farming and bringing plants from their homelands. Plants were brought to this country for food, medicine, decoration and other purposes.

This area is home to many native plants that fall under various degrees of protection. Perhaps the most well known is American ginseng, which was once such a major export from this country that it was over-harvested and is now protected under international law.
