JOHN BREWER
JEFFERSONVILLE, NY John Brewer, a resident of Jeffersonville, died on Thursday, June 9, 2005 at the Horton Campus of the Orange Regional Medical Center in Middletown. He was 84.
The son of the late Richard and Edith Baratze Brewer, he was born April 15, 1921 in Manhattan.
A retired clerk at the Sullivan County Public Health office in Monticello, Brewer was a member of the Jeffersonville Planning Board, the America Association of Retired Persons and a U.S. Air Force veteran of World War II and Korea. He was a graduate of Peter Stuyvesant High School and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder, CO.
Brewer is survived by his wife, Lois Klemer Brewer, at home; two sons, Gregory S. and his wife Roseann of Jeffersonville and Douglas S. and his wife Lynne of Bethpage; six grandchildren, Ryan, Gregory, Kevin, Tara, John and Diana; a brother, Richard and his wife Ilma of Darling Point, New South Wales, Australia; and two nephews.
Services were held on Monday, June 6 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Jeffersonville.
Cremation was at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott.

AUGUSTUS COOK
NARROWSBURG, NY Augustus Cook, a resident of Narrowsburg and a longtime area resident died on Thursday, June 16, 2005 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris. He was 89.
The son of the late Augustus Sr. and Elizabeth Hahn Cook, he was born July 16, 1915 in Somers, NY.
He was a retired mechanic for the NY State Thruway.
He was married to the late Virginia Cook who passed away in 1985.
In the 1930s Cook worked as a cook for the CC camps. After moving to the local area he worked during the summers for Ten Mile River Boy Scout Camps.
He is survived by one daughter, Donna Caden and her husband Michael of Big Rock, TN; one son, Warren Cook and his wife Kathleen of Yulan; two grandsons, James Harrington and Warren Cook, Jr.; one granddaughter, Tami Harrington; two great-grandchildren, Amanda and Laura Harrington; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two sisters, Agnes and Madeline.
Services were held on Tuesday, June 21 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Reverend Peg VanSiclen officiating.
Cremation will take place at the HG Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg, PA.

JOHN J. CORTESE
BEACH LAKE, PA John J. Cortese, a resident of Beach Lake, died on Thursday, June 16, 2005. He was 76.
The son of the late Diadato and Domoca Buono Cortese, he was born April 20, 1929 in Beach Lake.
Cortese was the former owner of John Cortese Construction and a member of the Narrowsburg Fire Department, the Tusten Lions Club and the Del View Rod and Gun Club.
A family statement said: John was a devoted husband and father. His greatest enjoyment was having his large family around him. We will miss his towering presence and look forward to the day that we will all be reunited. It is written: Things which eye has not seen and ear has not heard, and which have not entered the heart of man, all that God has prepared for those who love him.
Cortese is survived by his wife, Doris Maas Cortese, at home; two sons, Richard and his wife Beth and Daniel and his wife Laura, all of Beach Lake; four daughters, Kathy and her husband Ed Rish of Dallas, Luanne and her husband Don Cole, Wendy and her husband Gerald Samson and Gail and her husband Tom Fasshauer, all of Beach Lake; 18 grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Anna Mecca of Dunmore; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by eight brothers, Vincent, Daniel, Joseph, Fred, Frank, Carl, Dominic and John.
Services were held on Monday, June 20 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home in Narrowsburg with the Pastor Robert McLoughlin officiating.
Interment will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

MADELINE JANE YOUNG-COSTELLO
EQUINUNK, PA Madeline Jane Young-Costello, a resident of Equinunk, passed away on Sunday June 19, 2005 at home with her family.
The daughter of Anna Malcolm-Young, she was born in Brooklyn New York on December 17, 1930. She was married to Charles Edward Costello on December 13, 1952.
Madeline and Charles Costello have three sons, Gerard and his wife Diane, Patrick and Kevin who all reside in Equinunk; one daughter, Dianne; six grand-children, Kelly Costello-Carney and her husband Scott of Equinunk, Sean Kevin Costello of Equinunk, Audrey Elizabeth Costello, Stevi-Pat Costello of Brooklyn, NY, Seanna Dufton of Passaic, NJ and Equinunk and Madelines littlest angel Brittany Shannon Costello of Jeffersonville, NY; a great grandson whom she adored, Walker Scott Carney of Equinunk; and five siblings, Sarah Young of Brooklyn, NY (deceased), Thomas Young of Brooklyn, NY (deceased), Lewis Young of Staten Island, NY (deceased), Loretta Imburgio of Lake Ariel, John Young and William Young both of Scranton.
A family statement said: Madeline was such a devoted, wife, mother, grandmother, great-grandmother, sister, aunt, and friend. She was a devoted Catholic and belonged to the Sacred Heart Monastery Organization and to the Oblates Society.
A memorial viewing will be held at the Bryant Funeral Home in Honesdale on Friday June 24 from 7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. A Memorial Mass will be held at St. Josephs Catholic Church in Rileyville on Saturday June 25 at 10:30 a.m.

JOHN JACK DONOVAN
LACKAWAXEN, PA John Jack Donovan, a resident of Lackawaxen, died at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale on Friday, June 10, 2005. He was 72.
The son of the late John J. and Mary Hosty Donovan, he was born on June 9, 1933 in Brooklyn, NY. He was married to Philomae S. (Kashuboski) Donovan on October 20, 1956 in Nanticoke.
He was a retired engineer for Bell Atlantic in Monticello and a general contractor, owner and operator of Donovan & Son. He was a member of St. Anns Church in Shohola, the Holy Name Society and a member and past commander of Eckert Haupt VFW Post # 5635.
He is survived by his wife, Phil; his daughter, Denise Donovan of Forestburgh, NY; two sons, Michael of Lackawaxen and John of Shohola; a brother, Joseph of Bay St. Lois, MA; and a sister, Mary Dymeck of Milford
He was predeceased by a daughter, Maureen Donovan in 1974.
Interment is in St. Anns Cemetery in Shohola.

ANGELO GARCIA
LONG EDDY, NY Angelo Garcia, a resident of Long Eddy and a longtime area resident, died on Wednesday, June 15, 2005 at the Wilson Memorial Hospital in Johnson City. He was 77.
The son of the late Antonio and Carmen Garcia, he was born January 18, 1928 in New York City. He was the widower of Mary McLaughlin Garcia and Teresa Salacain Garcia.
Garcia was a retired track supervisor for Conrail and a member of St. Marys Church in Obernburg.
He is survived by a daughter, Maryann Garcia Streever of Callicoon; a son, Angelo D. of Midland, Tex; three step-children, Nancy Bye, Valerie Poirer and Patrick Degraw; a brother, Anthony and his wife Rose of Floral Park; two sisters, Pilar and her husband Daniel McLaughlin of Youngsville and Carmen and her husband Sal Villanti of Bohemia; a sister-in-law, Mary Garcia of Brooklyn; four grandchildren, Ryan and John Streever and Corey and Nicholas Garcia; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by two brothers, Alfred and Fred Garcia.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, June 18 at St. Marys Church in Obernburg with Father John Richardson officiating.
Interment is in St. Marys Cemetery in Obernburg.

ESTELLA R. (WARNER) GOMBERT
SHOHOLA, PA Estella R. (Warner) Gombert, a resident of Shohola and a former resident of Hawley and Milford, died on June 15, 2005 at home. She was 79.
The daugher of the late Byron Warner and Bertha Williams Warner, she was born in Hawley, PA.
Gombert was a housewife who also worked at Vaccas Mill in Hawley, Dimmick Inn and Milford Convalescent Home. She is a former member of the First Presbyterian Church in Hawley where she taught Sunday school.
She is survived by a son, Barry of Shohola; a daughter, Bonny Lynn Gombert Yocum of Allentown; six granddaughters, Belinda Gombert Eilbacher and Cindy Gombert Crotty, both of Shohola, Katrina Yocum David of Hazelton, Amanda Yocum Marks, Bethany Yocum and Heather Yocum, all of Allentown; five great-grandsons; and four great-granddaughters.
She was predeceased by her husband of 22 years, Samuel Frederick Gombert, Jr.
Services were held on Monday, June 20 at Teeters East Chapel in Hawley.
Interment will be at Mill Rift Cemetery.

ANGELINA GONZALEZ
WAYMART, PA Angelina Melendez Gonzalez, a resident of Waymart, died on Sunday, June 13, 2005 at Wayne Memorial Hospital following an illness. She was 91.
The daughter of the late Florencio Valentin and Juana Sierra Melendez, she was born in Manati, Puerto Rico on May 4, 1914.
She was married to the late Augustin Gonzalez, former prizefighter and Golden Glove Award winner in the 1930s who died in 1992. They were married for 54 years.
Gonzalez came to New York in 1937 and she and her husband owned several candy stores and soda fountains in Manhattan and the Bronx.
She was known for being a compassionate and caring person who put other peoples needs before hers. She delighted in cooking and everyone enjoyed her culinary skills. She was a gifted seamstress and enjoyed embroidery and gardening. She was a member of St. John the Evangelist Roman Catholic Church in Honesdale.
Gonzalez is survived by two daughters, Juanita Micucci and her husband Anthony of North Carolina and Angie Swendsen and her husband David of Tyler Hill; a brother, Enrique Melendez and his wife Ana Estelle of Santurce, Puerto Rico; four grandchildren, Anthony and Robert Micucci, Christina Barrett and her husband John and Eric Swendsen; a great-granddaugher, Danamarie Cappelli; and a great-great-granddaughter, Nicole.
Services were held on Thursday, June 16 at the Hessling Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at St. John the Evangelist Church in Honesdale.
Interment is in St. Mary Magdalen Cemetery.

EVELYN MACDONNELL
SHOHOLA, PA Evelyn MacDonnell, a resident of Shohola and a 28-year resident of the area, died on Tuesday, June 21, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis. She was 84.
The daughter of the late Kenneth Hess and Mary Murphy Hess, she was born in Manhattan on January 29, 1921.
She was a retired bank teller in Westbury, NY and a member of St. Anns RC Church.
She was the widower of the late Joseph A. MacDonnell who died on April 27, 1988.
She is survived by a son, Joseph and his wife Joyce of Westbury; and nieces and nephews.
Services will be held on Saturday, June 25, 2005 with a Mass of Resurrection at 10:00 a.m. in St. Anns RC Church with the Reverend Anthony Moore officiating.
Interment will be at St. Anns Cemetery in Shohola.

ELDA M. SVECAK
NARROWSBURG, NY Elda Maria Svecak, a resident of Narrowsburg and a longtime area resident, died on Monday, June 13, 2005 at home. She was 63.
The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Dainese, she was born September 5, 1942 in Rijeka, Croatia. She was married to Alex Svecak for 39 years.
Svecak worked as a manager of the dietary department for Wayne Delaware Manor for 10 years.
A family statement said: She always lived life to its fullest and was a thoughtful and wonderful person who will be greatly missed.
Svecak is survived by her husband, Alex Svecak, at home; two sons, Stephen of Florida and Marko of New Jersey; a brother, Luciano Dainese; a sister, Loridana Berisha; two grandchildren, Marinko and Milan; and several nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by a brother, Claudio Mafai.
A Mass of Christian Burial was held on Saturday, June 18 at St. Anthony of Padua Catholic Church in Yulan with the Reverend Anthony Moor, O.F.M. officiating.
Interment will be in the St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.
