Vote close, schools closed

LAKE HUNTINGTON, NY— Despite the public’s two-to-one vote against the budget proposal that wove a connecting thread between an 18.8 percent tax increase and the closing of two elementary school buildings, the board has approved an austerity budget made from the same cloth. On June 2, the Sullivan West Board of Education voted to close the Narrowsburg and Delaware Valley elementary schools and abolish 44 positions, including two administrators, two nurses, numerous teachers and aids.

The high school auditorium was half-empty.

Marine seeks leave for newborn son

KAUNEONGA LAKE, NY—A Monticello soldier says the Marine Corps lied to him about his assignment and his tour of duty and then denied him compassionate leave to be with his wife at the end of a difficult pregnancy. He’s calling for Congress to investigate and for someone to help him get home.

Closed bridge, everybody down

LACKAWAXEN, PA—Lackawaxen residents and businesses may be looking at another interstate detour this season, according to National Park Service (NPS) Superintendent David Forney.

Forney told the Upper Delaware Council (UDC) last week that the Federal Highway Administration (FHA) is undertaking a new review of the problematic concrete surface of the bridge on its westernmost segment.
