What if Picasso had met Einstein?

June 3, 4, 10 and 11 at 8:00 p.m. June 5 and 12 at 2:00 p.m. $15 ($12 for senior citizens/students). Rivoli Theatre, South Fallsburg, NY. 845/434-7232.

Pablo Picasso, Albert Einstein and others meet in a café, the Lapin Agile, in Paris, 1904. Picasso is about to begin his Rose Period and Einstein is ready to submit his first paper on relativity. This meeting of 20th century minds never really happened, but Steve Martin’s play, “Picasso at the Lapin Agile,” imagines what might have taken place if it did. The play, directed by Christopher Weber, is about attraction, creativity and the tension between celebrity, genius and talent. It also explores ideas that did and did not work. The dialog is lightweight, funny and nearly profound. Phillipe Hanania of Washingtonville is suitably intense as Einstein and Picasso gets energetic treatment from Mike Vargas of Goshen. Attraction issues surface with the characters of Germaine (Ellen Pavloff of Kerhonkson) and Suzanne (Rebecca Robbins of New Paltz). The other denizens of the bar include Freddy, played by John Neails of Monticello; Gaston, played by Steve Lavelle of Liberty; Sargeant Jess Beveridge of Circleville, played by Scott Griffith of Southfields and Vincent Seekamp of Monticello.
