Thirteenth Highland Triathlon is wet and wild

By RICHARD A. ROSS

YULAN, NY—How’s this for a fitness program? Jump into Washington Lake and swim a half a mile but wear a wet suit since the water is only 60 degrees. Strip off the wet suit and transition to bike gear because you’re in for a 14.7-mile bike ride with the final 4.7 miles up a steep incline.

Hold it, you’re not done yet.

Drop your bike and take off on a four-mile run around the lake and you’ll not only have had a great workout, you’ll have joined the legions of fitness enthusiasts who have competed for the past 13 years in the Highland Triathlon organized by swimming teacher Doug Stern.
