Founding father, Amram keeps it coming

MILFORD, PA — David Amram and Jack Kerouac gave the first-ever jazz/poetry reading in NYC in 1957, it is viewed as one of the foundations for spoken word, hip-hop and a resurgence of musical and literary collaborations of all kinds around the world. On Saturday, May 21 Amram will read and sign copies of his books from 4:00 p.m. until 6:00 p.m. at the Mill Run Booksellers, and on Sunday, June 12 at 4:00 p.m. he will perform at Milford Music Festival.

Amram has composed more than 100 orchestral and chamber music works, written many scores for film and Broadway theater including, “Splendor in The Grass” and “The Manchurian Candidate.” He was appointed the first composer-in-residence with the New York Philharmonic in 1966, under Leonard Bernstein. He plays French horn, piano, guitar, numerous flutes and whistles percussion, and a variety of folk instruments.

Amram has appeared with Willy Nelson at Farm Aid seven times, recorded with Lionel Hampton and Dizzy Gillespie and jammed with legendary jazz saxophonist, Charlie Parker.

The Milford Music Festival will be held for the third year on Friday, June 10 from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m., on Saturday, June 11 from 12:00 noon to 2:00 p.m. and on Sunday, June 12 from 1:00 to 5:30 p.m. with free headline performances on the main stage under the big tent in Milford’s Ann Street Park. Open-air performances will be held from 2:00 p.m. and 5:00 p.m. on Saturday and between 1:00 p.m. and 3:00 p.m. on Sunday. Restaurants and taverns will feature live music indoors both Friday and Saturday night and performances at Grey Towers National Historic Site are free throughout the weekend.
