WILLIAM “BILL” A. ALGER

GODEFFROY, NY — William “Bill” A. Alger, a resident of Godeffroy and a lifelong area resident, died Tuesday, April 19, 2005 at the Orange County Medical Center Horton Campus. He was 71.

The son of the late Albert and Emma VonHoff Alger, he was born in Manhattan, NY. At 16 he went to work for the former Port Jervis Bakery until he went into the service from 1953 to 1955. He proudly served his country in the United States Army during the Korean conflict. Later he worked at the Reynold’s Metal in Middletown for almost 15 years. He went to work for Sorrento Cheese in Goshen from where he retired.

A family statement read: “He was an avid pigeon fancier all his life.”

He is survived by his sister, Lenna Bennett of Godeffroy, and a nephew, Martin Bennett and his wife Laura of Sparrowbush.

Services were held on Friday, April 22 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home in Port Jervis with the Reverend Elizabeth Diver of the St. Peter’s Lutheran Church in Port Jervis officiating.

Interment will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Middletown, NY.

LAWRENCE CARD, JR

COCHECTON, NY — Lawrence Card, Jr., a resident of Cochecton, died on Saturday, April 30, 2005 at the Catskill Regional Medical Center, Grover M. Herman Division. He was 67.

The son of the late Lawrence Card Sr. and Anna Cisco Card, he was born July 15, 1937 in Paterson, NJ.

He was a retired custodian for the Sullivan West School District and was a Korean conflict veteran having served in the U.S. Air Force. He was a member of the United Methodist Church in the Town of Bethel.

He is survived by his wife, Rosmary Ranier Card, at home; four sons, Lawrence Card III and his wife, Darlene of Swan Lake, Jimmy and his wife Cindy of Montague, NJ, Johnny and his wife Jackie of Glennville, GA, and Steve and his wife Lisa of Montague, NJ; one daughter, Karen Doyon and her husband Dale of Swan Lake; two brothers, Lewis and his wife Virginia of Blue Ridge, GA and Howard and his wife Grace of Wantage, NJ; one sister, Anna (Sis) Verbiest of Vernon, NJ; 12 grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by a granddaughter, Crystal Card.

Services were held on Tuesday, May 3 at the Ramsay Funeral Home with the Reverend Kenneth Rodgers officiating.

Interment will be in the Evergreen Cemetery in Bethel.

HEDWIG NEUHAUS

MILFORD, PA — Hedwig (Hedy) Neuhaus, a resident of Milford and a former resident of New Jersey, died on April 26, 2005 at Milford Senior Care. She was 89.

The daughter of the late August and Elisabeth Huppert, she was born in Beckum, Germany on July 19, 1915. She came to the United States in 1953 and lived in New Jersey until 1969.

She is survived by two daughters, Erika Smith of South Plainfield, NJ and Ingrid Bartsch of Greeley, PA; a sister, Waltraud Vehrenkemper of Beckum, Germany; three grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husbands Heinrich Steege (MIA) and William Neuhaus; two brothers, Wilhelm and August Huppert; a grandson; and a great-grandson.

Interment will be at St. Ann’s Cemetery, German Hill, Shohola, PA at the convenience of the family.

FRED SCHMIDT

GREENFIELD PARK, NY — Fred Schmidt, a resident of Greenfield Park, died on Friday, April 29, 2005 in Westchester Medical Center, Valhalla, NY. He was 66.

The son of Edward and Katy Ross Schmidt, he was born September 15, 1938 in M-Gladbach, Germany.

He was a retired head of maintenance for Occupations, Inc. He built and renovated his home himself. He was a beloved husband, father and grandfather. He loved his family with his whole heart. He treated his friends like they were family. He will be greatly missed by all.

He is survived by his wife, Laurie, at home; three daughters, Theresa Mihok and her husband Mickey of Middletown, Debbie Schmidt and her husband Dale of Jeffersonville,and Diane Mohr and her husband Mike of Allentown, PA; one son, Mike and his wife Tiffany of South Dakota; two step-children, Allyson Hill and Steven Hill at home; four grandchildren, Tommy Johnson, Ashley Sawall, Jamie Schmidt and Janet Hill; and one brother, Ralph of Jeffersonville.

He was predeceased by one brother, Armin.

Services were held on Monday, May 2 at the Colonial Memorial Funeral Home.

Cremation will be at the Cedar Hill Crematory.

In lieu of flowers donations may be made to the family.
