Folk music coming to Harmonie Hall

CALLICOON, NY — Folk legends Greg Artzner and Terry Leonino and the up-and-coming multi-instrumentalist Joe Crookston will each perform at The Western Hotel on Saturday, May 7 at 8:30 p.m. in a concert presented by WJFF 90.5 FM.

The cabaret-style concert with a cash bar will fill the hotel’s historic Harmonie Hall, a grand old ballroom with high tin ceilings and warm acoustics. The duo of Artzner and Leonino, known as Magpie, have been playing music together for over 30 years. From traditional, classic country, swing, blues of the 1920s and 1930s and their original contemporary songs, Artzner and Leonino cover a lot of musical ground. Leonino’s versatile voice offers jazz and blues in the tradition of Connie Boswell and Billie Holiday, but is equally comfortable with traditional folk and contemporary songs. Artzner’s fingerstyle approach owes a lot to his heroes, guitar legends Reverend Gary Davis, Big Bill Broonzy, Nick Lucas, Phil Ochs and Rolly Brown.

Singer/songwriter Crookston has been making a name for himself in the Seattle, WA area for a number of years but has only recently come to be known nationwide. In addition to guitar, he plays the clawhammer banjo and fiddle. His music has been featured on National Public Radio’s “All Songs Considered” and Minnesota Public Radio’s “Morning Show.” He has shared festival stages with the likes of Livingston Taylor, John McCutcheon, Arlo Guthrie and Tim Reynolds.

Tickets cost $16 in advance and $18 at the door. For more information call 845/482-4141 or visit wjffradio.org.
