Sullivan West teams find their stroke

Lady Bulldogs remain undefeated with a trio of wins

CALLICOON, NY — The season may be young, but the Sullivan West girls’ golf team (5-0, 3-0 OCIAA) has thrown down the gauntlet on their opponents.

The Lady Bulldogs shot well in an April 18 match against Marlboro at the Mill Creek Golf Course. Shooting the front nine (par 36), Melanie Kleiner shot a 53, Nellie Norden posted a 58 and Kate Fanning shot a 68. The team’s combined score of 178 bested Marlboro’s 218.

The next day the girls came back to outshoot Monroe-Woodbury at the Valley Central Golf Course by a score of 174 to 190. Shooting on the front nine (part of 38), Norden and Kleiner’s scores each totaled 56, and Fanning posted a score of 62.

Returning home on April 20 to the Villa Roma, Sullivan West easily outmatched Fallsburg 139-183 on the par 35 front nine. Norden led the team with 40, Kleiner shot a 43 and Fanning shot a 56.

Aside from Kingston, Bulldogs remain unblemished

CALLICOON, NY — With a plethora of golfers on hand, Sullivan West can pick and choose who will represent them in matches as the season progresses. On April 18, the squad of Justin Armstrong (41), Ben Kleiner (42), Kenny Rhodes (45), John Nober (55), and Kevin Correa (56) combined to defeat The Family School 238-282 on the Villa Roma front nine (par 35). Sullivan West’s record improved to 4-0 while The Family School fell to 0-2.

The “A” team followed that win the next day as Sean Semenetz posted a 38. Other golfers came on strong, including Armstrong (38), Joe Winski (41), Ross Bernhardt (48), and Nober (55). Sullivan West improved to 5-0 (2-0 OCIAA) while Fallsburg fell to 0-2 (0-1 OCIAA).

The week ended with a three-way match against Kingston and John S. Burke Catholic at Wiltwyck Golf Course in Kingston. The Bulldogs easily bested Burke but came up short against Section IX powerhouse Kingston. Shooting the front nine (par 36), Semenetz led the Bulldogs with a score of 39. Other golfers scores included Kleiner (44), Armstrong (44), Rhodes (45) and Winski (50). Sullivan West racked up a score of 222, which came in above Kingston’s 208, but the Bulldogs beat Burke’s score of 244. Sullivan West’s record at week’s end was 4-1.
