Chapel Field’s Renwick picks up where Schaper left off

By RICHARD A. ROSS

PINE BUSH, NY — When Chapel Field’s Julie Schaper graduated last June, competitors exhaled a collective sigh of relief. Dominating for five years, Schaper guided the Lady Lions to a pair of state titles and menaced batters with her blazing riser.

But just when you thought it was safe to enter the batters’ box against Chapel Field, here comes the next wave. Ashlee Renwick has batters whiffing and wondering just like Schaper did. Renwick, a junior, is a veteran of the Montgomery Red Devils traveling team. Renwick’s arsenal includes a riser, a drop pitch and a change up.

In her first four games, Renwick (4-0) dominated the opposition, including throwing a two-hit shutout against Albertus Magnus on April 9, a one-hitter against Livingston Manor, and ringing up 14 strikeouts against Tuxedo. Renwick has also done some damage with her bat. Against Class C Tuxedo, she went 2-for-4 and hit a homerun. Chapel Field is strengthened by the experienced play of Laura Bast at third base, Lara Kuperas in center field and Jenna Vellenga behind the plate.
