Round the bases: early spring action
Bulldogs bats come alive in first win of the season
By RICHARD A. ROSS
MONTICELLO, NY For Sullivan West, a team looking to right the shi p after three straight losses, nothing could have provided a better tonic than a solid pitching effort.
Will OBrien (1-0) delivered that remedy with a complete game performance on April 11 against Monticello. OBrien allowed two runs on four hits. His effort was aided by the timely resurgence of the Bulldogs batters. Lloyd Shaffer, Jim Maloney, John Glassel and Joe Meyer each had two RBI. Garrett Owen, Kevin Brewer and Matt Berger drove in a run apiece as Sullivan West (1-3) batted .333 as a team against the Panthers. Julio Manguel went 2-for-2 and Trevor Gavin had an RBI for Monticello (1-1). The two teams were scheduled to hook up twice more this week, including games at Jeffersonville on April 12 and at Monticello on April 14. See next weeks River Reporter for results.
Fallsburg wins its season opener behind fine pitching from Gates
FALLSBURG, NY Using control, changing speeds and his plane of pitches, Fallsburgs Chris Gates buzzed through Livingston Manors lineup on April 7, allowing only three hits in six innings as the Comets (1-0) got off on the right foot in their opener against the Wildcats (0-1). Gates struck out six and went 1-4, and at bat he drove in two runs.
For most of the game, Gates and Manors Marvin Bonilla were locked in a pitching duel. Bonilla went 2-for-3. Teammates Kelly Lackey and Derek Irwin also registered hits for the Wildcats. Harris Seletsky, who pitched a hitless seventh inning, relieved Gates. Justin Kruckmeyer doubled and had two hits for Fallsburg.
