Discover the ancient art of the Damascus Mint
NARROWSBURG, NY The Art of the Ancients, a free lecture illustrating the history and process of the Damascus Mint plaques and pendants, will be presented on Saturday, March 19 at 1:00 p.m. at the Delaware Arts Center by Mort Malkin, an independent scholar, and ceramic artists Ed and Anne Nocera.
The Damascus Mint has used its collection of ancient Greek coins and Mesopotamian stamp and cylinder seals to create direct impressions in porcelain and stoneware from the original artifacts. The lecture will discuss the sophisticated artwork of the ancient cultures including cave paintings at Altimira and Lascaux, fertility amulets and stamp seals of the earliest settlements and the finely engraved cylinder seals of Sumer, Babylon and Assyria. Attendees may view several of the actual stone seals. The lecture will also examine the process by which the seals are directly imprinted into porcelain, glazed, stained and fired to produce the pendants and plaques for the Damascus Mint. Damascus Mint plaques and pendants will be available for sale at the newly opened Signature Gifts shop at the Delaware Arts Center.
