NICHOLAS J. DUFFY

GREELEY, PA — Nicholas J. Duffy, a 13-year resident of Greeley and a former resident of Brooklyn, NY, died on February 16, 2005 at the Ellen Memorial Health Care Center in Honesdale following an illness. He was 77.

The son of the late Nicholas and Emily Cooke Duffy, he was born in the Bronx, NY.

A retired butcher for Morgan David Packing House in the Bronx; he was an Army veteran of the Korean conflict from 1951-1963. He was a member of the Knights of Columbus in Brooklyn and a member of the St. Anne’s RC Church in Shohola.

He is survived by his sisters, Theresa Belwin in Honesdale, Aileen Passanisi of NY, Kathleen Bocznienicz of Dalton, Emily Helveston of NJ and Anne Jane Shuncko of NY; and several nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his wife of 48 years, Rosalie Ann Fischer Duffy; a brother, Albert; and two sisters, Mary Kilbridge and Deanna Duffy.

Services were held on Monday, February 21 at the St. Anne’s Roman Catholic Church with the Reverend Thomas J. Petro, pastor, officiating.

Interment will be in St. Anne’s Cemetery in Shohola Township.


LORETTA E. GILBERT

HUNTERSVILLE, NC — Loretta E. Gilbert, a resident of Huntersville and a former resident of Lake Huntington, NY, died on Wednesday, February 16, 2005 at the Seeling Division of the Catskill Regional Medical Center in Harris, NY. She was 67.

The daughter of the late Frederick and Natalie “Lillian” DeSantis Gasko, she was born September 2, 1937 in Lake Huntington.

She was a registered nurse with the Presbyterian Hospital Wellsley Health Care in Charlotte, NC, and a graduate of Narrowsburg Central School and St. Claire’s Nursing School in New York City. She was a registered nurse at Community General Hospital in Harris before moving to North Carolina.

She received a Grace Under Adversity Award at Presbyterian Hospital Wellsley Health Care and she was a part-time owner of Gilbert’s Inn in Lake Huntington for nine years. She was a member of the New York State Nurses Association, the town of Cochecton Ambulance corps and the Women’s Community Club of Cochecton.

A family statement read: “Our mom was faced with many adversities over the years. Her positive attitude, faith in God and outlook on life is an inspiration to all of us. So it is for this inspiration that she will live on in us as we struggle through our hardships. She will be greatly missed by her family and all that knew her.”

She is survived by her husband, Maurice J. Gilbert Jr. at home; five children, Michael and his wife Sally, and Christopher and his wife Donna all of Huntersville, NC, Patricia and her husband Stephan Schmidt and Diane and her husband Thomas Meyer, all of Jeffersonville and Andrea and Raymond Ninni of DeBary, FL; and a brother, Fred and his wife Mary Ann Gasko of Littleton, NC; one sister, Mary Ann Szabo of Lake Huntington; one aunt, Madelyn Mold of Madison, WI; 14 grandchildren, Shannon and Morgan Gilbert, Kristen and Christopher Gilbert, Bryan, Michael and Erica Schmidt, Vanessa, Katrina, Joseph and Stephanie Meyer and Alexa, Anthony and Ryan Nanni.

She was predeceased by one sister, Florence Gasko.

Services were held on Monday, February 21 at the Rasmussen Funeral Home followed by a Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady of the Lake Roman Catholic Church in Lake Huntington. The Reverend Gus Richardson OFM and the Reverend Anthony McGuire OFM officiated.

Interment will be in St. Francis Cemetery in Narrowsburg.

JOHN W. GLENDON JR

NARROWSBURG, NY — John W. Glendon Jr., a resident Narrowsburg and a lifetime area resident, died on Friday, February 18, 2005 at the Wayne Memorial Hospital in Honesdale, PA. He was 44.

The son of the late John and Joan Renshaw Glendon Sr., he was born September 17, 1960 in Newark, NJ.

He retired from the United States Navy after having served 20 years, and he was a member of the Navy’s ABF Association.

A family statement read: “He was a free spirit, he loved the road of his country. He rode with Rolling Thunder on occasion. He will be greatly missed.”

He is survived by two sons, John Glendon III and Philip at home; four brothers, Robert of Moyock, NC, James of Tampa, FL, Thomas Patrick of Beach Lake, and Donald of Hankins, NY; one sister, Mary E. Bryan of Youngsville, NY; his companion, Diana Foster; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, February 24 at 2:00 p.m. at the Rasmussen Funeral Home on Main Street in Narrowsburg with the Reverend Lee Andrews officiating.

Cremation will be at the Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald, PA.


WALTER EDWARD ROSE

HANKINS, NY — Walter Edward Rose, a resident of Hankins, died on Sunday, February 13, 2005 at home. He was 62.

The son of the late Walter and Adelette Rockwell Rose, he was born on April 12, 1942 in the Bronx, NY.

He served in the U.S. Army and worked for Con Edison for 18 years. He moved to Sullivan County 25 years ago from Maywood, NJ. He worked as an addictions services counselor at the Sullivan County Alcohol and Drug Abuse Services.

A statement from friends reads: “Walter was one of the best friends a person could have. His kindness and compassion were remarkable. He will be forever remembered in the hearts of his loved ones. He touched many people in his life’s work and will be greatly missed.”

He is survived by Gene Baumgartner of Callicoon, his lifelong partner and many dear friends. God will surely bless him with light and love.

Services were held on Monday, February 21 at the Stewart-Murphy Funeral Home in Callicoon.

Cremation will take place at the Twin Tiers Crematory in Endicott, NY.

MYRA A. STONE

MATAMORAS, PA — Myra A. Stone, a resident of Matamoras and a lifelong area resident, died on Tuesday, February 15, 2005 at her home. She was 61.

The daughter of the late Lucian B. and Hazel M. Major Hissam, she was born on September 29, 1973 in Milford.

She was a retired head housekeeper at Eddy Farm Hotel, a former member of the Matamoras and Westfall Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary, a Matamoras Recreation Department volunteer and an EMT on the Port Jervis Volunteer Ambulance. After retiring from Eddy Farm, she worked as a cashier at Jamesway and K-Mart.

She is survived by her husband, Howard R. Stone, Sr., at home; her son, Howard R. Stone, Jr. and his wife Monica of Dingman’s Ferry; two daughters, Joanna Stone and Lynette Davis both of Matamoras; two brothers, Robert Hissam of Matamoras and William Hissam of Greeley; two sisters, Marjorie Konkol of Greeley and Margaret Lemke of Matamoras; eight grandchildren, Ashley, Christopher, Shayne, Sherelyn, Valerie, Howard III, Harley and Sylvia. She is also survived by aunts, uncles, cousins, nephews and nieces.

She was predeceased by a nephew, John Cokelette, and a grandson, Baby Boy Stone.

Services were held on Friday, February 18, 2005 at the Gray-Parker Funeral Home with Eileen Perrault officiating.

Cremation will be at the H.G. Smith Crematory in Stroudsburg.

JOSEPHINE TUNNEY

SPARROWBUSH, NY — Josephine Tunney, a resident of Sparrowbush, NY and a lifelong area resident, died on Tuesday, February 18, 2005 at Bon Secours Community Hospital in Port Jervis, NY. She was 81.

The daughter of the late Natal Piccolo and Edna Crisi Piccolo, she was born April 17, 1923 in Highland Falls, NY.

Co-owner of Tunney’s Lamp Shop in Sparrowbush, she attended Most Sacred Heart Roman Catholic Church and was a member of the Sparrowbush Fire Department Ladies Auxiliary.

She is survived by one son, John and his wife Carol of Sparrowbush; two daughters, Patricia Flannery and her husband Michael of Monroe and Margaret Tunney of Easton, PA; two sisters, Ann Ziffino and Mary Billman of Port Jervis; one brother, Joseph Piccolo of Matamoras, PA; four grandchildren, Regina Peterson, Colleen Susta, Joseph Tunney and Colin Tunney; five great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by two brothers, Thomas Ruff and Alfred Piccolo.

A family statement said: “Josie loved working with antiques in and out of her business and conversing with others about them. She was a hard worker who had a terrific sense of humor. About all was her love for her grandchildren and family. Love ya all the day.”

A mass of Christian burial was celebrated on Monday, February 21 in St. Mary’s Roman Catholic Church in Port Jervis with Father Antony Ignaci officiating.

Interment will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery in Sparrowbush, NY.

JOEL DANIEL VERBEKE

HONESDALE, PA — Joel Daniel Verbeke, a three-year resident of Honesdale and a former resident of Hawley, died on February 16, 2005 at Geisinger Hospital in Danville. He was 20.

The son of Donna Marie Crawn Verbeke and Daniel James Verbeke, he was born in Mt. Hope, NJ.

He was a student at the Wallenpaupack Area Special Education Department.

A family statement said: “Joel was a happy-go-lucky guy who gave unconditional love to everyone he met. He loved and was loved by all his family. He was a special boy who loved Barney and all his dogs and other animals.”

He is survived by his mother, Donna Marie Verbeke of Honesdale; his father, Daniel James Verbeke and his wife Karen of Hawley; his sisters, Autumn Verbeke of Honesdale and Rachel Peach of Hawley; four brothers, Nathaniel Verbeke of Honesdale, Ryan Peach of Hawley, and Robert and Richard Peach both of Coco, FL; a niece, Gabrielle Verbeke of Honesdale; his maternal grandparents, Doris and Willard Crawn of Sidney, NY; and his paternal grandmother, Viola Verbeke of Hope, NJ.

Services were held on Friday, February 18 at Teeters’ East Chapel.

NORMAN WEBER

NARROWSBURG, NY — Norman E. Weber, a resident of Narrowsburg NY and a lifelong area resident, died on Friday, February 18, 2005. He was 72.

The son of the late Fred and Katie Gabel Weber, he was born on April 16, 1932 in Callicoon, NY.

A retired carpenter for JW Smith Construction in Yulan, he was a veteran of the U.S. Army, having served in the Korean conflict as an MP.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Cheryl LaBarr Weber, at home; four daughters, Kelly Sepero and her husband Bryan of Brookfield, CT, Karen Langel and her husband Christopher of Archbald, PA, Kathleen Weber and Michael Fuchs of Narrowsburg and Kasey Yakavonis and her husband Michael of Brookfield, CT; six grandchildren, Katie Fuchs, Matthew, Camryn and Courtney Spero and Alex and Austin Langel; two brothers, Walter of Newburgh and Ralph of Florida.

Cremation will take place at Maple Hill Crematory in Archbald, PA.
