Monticello gymnasts roll at ‘I Love NY’

BINGHAMTON, NY — The girls’ team of the Monticello Gymnastics Club competed at the I Love New York Cup in Binghamton on February 4, 5 and 6.

The competition is a state qualifier and the largest gymnastics competition in New York State. Teams from as far away as Florida and Maine participate.

In the level 4 competition Shannon Brucher placed second in the vault with a score of 8.85, second on the balance beam with 8.925, and fourth on the floor with an 8.5. Brucher placed third overall.

In her first meet, Kayla Fleiger placed seventh on the vault with a score of 8.8. Delani Meier placed seventh on the uneven bars with a 7.35. Carly Klemen, Ali Reynolds and Chelsea Wayman, along with the rest of the level 4 gymnasts, all qualified for the state championships and took third place in the team cup.

In level 5, Breanna Brucher placed 15th on the vault with a score of 8.95 and 15th on the floor with an 8.65. Both Breanna and Catherine Dean’s scores were high enough to qualify them for state competitions. Lexa Yacino qualified for sectionals. Also on the team are Nicole Episalla and Taylor Welch-O’Connor.

Girls compete at World Cup Gymnastics Club

CHAPPAQUA, NY — On Sunday, February 13 the girls of the Monticello Gymnastics Club competed at the World Cup Gymnastics Center in Chappaqua, NY.

In level 4, the girls were broken down into three age divisions. Competing in the eight-year-old division were Shannon Brucher, Ali Reynolds and Joanna Sikorska. In this age class Sikorska, in addition to placing seventh in the all-around with a score of 33.775, won a medal for sixth place on the beam and eighth place on the vault. S. Brucher placed second on the vault and sixth on the bars, and Reynolds placed 10th on the vault.

Competing in the age 9 division were Delani Meier and Chelsea Wayman. Wayman took second place on the vault. In the 11+ division were Carly Klemen and Kayla Flieger, who in her second competition took fourth place on the vault.

The level 4 girls also took sixth place out of the 13 competing gyms in the All-Around Team Cup, taking home a trophy.

In level 5, Breanna Brucher, Catherine Dean, Taylor Welch-O’Connor, and Lexa Yacino competed, all taking home medals. B. Brucher, the only Monticello gymnast competing in the 11-year-old division, took fourth place in the all-around with a score of 34.2. In addition she won second place on the vault, second on the floor and sixth on the bars. The remainder of the gymnasts competed in the 12+ age group with Dean taking fourth and Yacino placing sixth on the floor exercise. Welch-O’Connor placed 12th on the beam. Also on the level 5 team is Nicole Episalla who did not attend this meet.

The girls of the Monticello Gymnastics Club are coached by Pedro “Pete” Tweed, Amanda Tweed and Maria Karkos.
