John Cohen to attend ‘The High Lonesome Sound’ screening

LOCH SHELDRAKE, NY — WJFF Radio Catskill and the Hippodrome Theater in Loch Sheldrake continue their popular Winter Film Series on Saturday, February 19 at 7:30 p.m with a documentary screening of “The High Lonesome Sound,” a film that looks at the extraordinary lives of Bluegrass and Appalachian musicians in the 1960s.

Filmmaker John Cohen will be on hand to speak about the film and share slides of his famous photos that documented the life and music of rural America. Tickets are on a sliding scale from $5 to $10.

For years, John Cohen has devoted his energy and talent to the cause of traditional music, first as a member of the New Lost City Ramblers, but also, as a filmmaker and photographer. He started making films in 1962 in order to bring the music he loved and played together with images that he was famous for capturing with a still camera. Filmmaking provided a way to present traditional musicians in their home setting, to reveal the environment in which music happens and to show how music functions within its community.

WJFF Radio Catskill is a non-commercial, hydro-powered, public radio station that has been bringing national and community programming to the airwaves for fifteen years. WJFF depends upon fundraising events such as this film festival for a large part of its annual revenue.
