A room tax considered in Wayne

HONESDALE, PA — Wayne County Commissioners are expecting to hear soon from the Pocono Mountain Vacation Bureau about a possible hotel room tax and how much it should benefit the financially troubled Mountain Laurel Performing Arts Center in Pike County.

“In Wayne County, we have been generally in favor of it,” said Anthony Herzog, chairman of the Wayne County Commissioners. “However, we want to protect small bed and breakfast and small operations. They need to collect the tax so they should have representation in advertising and in the way the money will be spent.”

It may be more burdensome for such businesses since they do not have the economies of scale that large operations have, he said.

“There is a concern that the big hoteliers are running the bus,” he said. “We just want to be sure there is true representation there.”
