WHITE MILLS, PA — The Dorflinger Glass Museum will celebrate President’s Day weekend with a special display and program on Friday, February 18 from 3:00 to 5:00 p.m. at the Roger M. Blough Building on the Dorflinger-Suydam Sanctuary grounds on Long Ridge Road with the display of a rare collection of Presidential glass made for the White House by the Dorflinger Glass factories. Admission is $5.00 per person, including light refreshments. Admission is free for members of the sanctuary.

In addition, historian Kurt Reed will present a slide lecture entitled “Dining at the White House” beginning at 3:15 p.m. Reed is a noted lecturer on topics that include Dorflinger Glass, the glass industry in Wayne County and Christmas traditions through the ages. He has lectured extensively at many of the past annual conventions of the American Cut Glass Association and for several other glass collectors’ groups. He is a member of the ACGA, the National American Glass Club, the Dorflinger Glass Study Group, Waymart Historical Society, Wayne County Historical Society and several other organizations.

Glassmaker Christian Dorflinger opened his first factory in Brooklyn, New York in 1852. In 1861 he made a set of glassware for the White House for use by President and Mrs. Lincoln. Over the course of the next 50 years, Dorflinger and his companies produced more glass for the White House including an elaborate cut pattern for President Benjamin Harrison. Examples of both the Lincoln and Harrison glass will be on display for the program.

The glass comes from the collections of the Dorflinger and Everhart Museums and several private collectors. A rare punch cup made for President Lincoln, recently donated to the Dorflinger Museum, will be featured in the display. Also in the display will be glass used in the White House made by other manufacturers.
